9 Mission 3: Why Chemistry?

10 What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of the composition of matter and the changes that matter undergoes properties, structure, composition, behavior, reactions, and interactions

11 A chemistry course is your ticket to
Why Chemistry? A chemistry course is your ticket to understanding the world around you! Chemistry is everywhere and touches your lives in multiple ways What cars to buy What medicines to take Legislation that affects your environment

12 Why Chemistry? Chemists make new materials and discover ways to use known materials for new purposes Chemists make contributions to the world around them by solving problems. Finding solutions to a problem often requires that a chemist work with other chemists, scientists, or with other types of workers: medical doctors, environmentalists, law enforcement officials, farmers, etc.

13 Why Chemistry Chemists are considered to be one of the most versatile of all employees and therefore can almost always find a job. 198,000 chemists in the US work force Education: 22% have a Bachelor’s degree 17% have masters 60% have doctorates

14 Chemical industry employs 64% Academic institutions employ 26%
Why Chemistry? 54% work in research 10% in production Rest in education, marketing, sales, computer programming, law or libraries Average Salary in $77,000 Chemical industry employs 64% Academic institutions employ 26% Government employs 9%

15 Did You Know?

16 What is your purpose in studying chemistry?
Why Chemistry? Mission 4: What is your purpose in studying chemistry?

17 the wise use of energy resources
“I am a chemist for…” the environment health the wise use of energy resources the development and wise use of materials food the history of chemistry the automobile personal care and grooming chemistry in the construction trades chemistry in the fine arts & crafts chemistry in earth & space science chemical education for all
