“The Days Of Our Years” Psalm 90: 1-12

Ps. 90 A Psalm of Moses

I. God is eternal – vs. 1-2 Lord = one who rules or governs “Our dwelling place” = only in God do we find a place of refuge from sin, sickness, sorrow, persecutions and death

Ps. 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

“From everlasting to everlasting, thou are God” = From the eternity prior to time to the eternity that follows after time ends

1 Tim. 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

II. Brevity and frailty of man – vs. 3-11
V. 3 – by sin man lost the right to Eden and the tree of life Since man cannot reach the tree of life in the here and now– all are subject to death

Heb. 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Is. 38:1 In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live.

V. 4 – While time is very important to man – God is not bound by time

V. 5 “As with a flood” – life is compared with a stream flowing away
“As a sleep” – How short is the time between pillowing your head and arising for a new day?

“Like grass” V. 6 “In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.”

“morning” --- “evening”- how quickly a day passes – life is the same way

Job 14:1-2 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

Vs. 7 – God’s “anger” and “wrath” are upon those that sin
They are “consumed” or must die because of sin

Rom. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

V. 8 – “iniquities” and “our secret sins” – Men have a tendency to hide their sins from God --- such is impossible

Heb. 4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

V. 9 “a tale that is told” – a thought or a sigh
ASV – “For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: We bring our years to an end as a sigh.”

V. 10 – “The days of our years are three score and ten --- four score” – 70 to 80 years
“Soon cut off” = at best man is soon cut off; he dies

V. 12 – “Teach us to number our days” – use our days wisely to glorify God, be a benefit to humanity and prepare for our home in heaven

Eph. 5:15-16 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Eph. 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

Mt. 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

The only way to commit ourselves to God is to do his will!

Ps. 90:12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
