PSALM 90: MOSES’ THEOLOGY God is the eternal creator: vv. 1-2 God’s authority – human brevity; vv. 3-6 God’s wrath – human sin; vv. 7-10 Proper human response; vv. 11-12 Prayer for God’s mercy; vv. 13-17

GOD IS THE ETERNAL CREATOR 90:1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

GOD IS THE ETERNAL CREATOR Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

GOD IS THE ETERNAL CREATOR God: El – The Mighty Creator God LORD: YHWH, Yahweh, Jehovah – The Covenant God of Israel Lord: Adonai – Master

GOD’S AUTHORITY – HUMAN BREVITY 90:3 You return man to dust and say, “Return, O children of man!” 4 For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. 5 You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: 6 in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers.

GOD’S AUTHORITY – HUMAN BREVITY Hebrews 9:27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment 2 Corinthians 4:17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

GOD’S WRATH – HUMAN SIN 90:7 For we are brought to an end by your anger; by your wrath we are dismayed. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. 9 For all our days pass away under your wrath; we bring our years to an end like a sigh. 10 The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.

GOD’S WRATH – HUMAN SIN Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned Romans 3:10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death

PROPER HUMAN RESPONSE 90:11 Who considers the power of your anger, and your wrath according to the fear of you? 12 So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

PRAYER FOR GOD’S MERCY 90:13 Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants! 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil. 16 Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. 17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!

GOD’S MERCY, LOVE, GRACE John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

GOD’S MERCY, LOVE, GRACE Romans 5:8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

GOD’S MERCY, LOVE, GRACE Revelation 21:3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

PRINCIPLES God : Eternal, Independent, Creator, Sovereign, Holy, Perfect, Personal, Just, Judge, Wrath, Loving, Merciful, Gracious Humans: dependent, weak, frail, sinners, all die Proper human response: fear the Lord, confess sin, repent, trust in Christ as Savior, number your days (live for Christ while on earth), look forward to your eternal home with Christ

APPLICATIONS Do you fear God (or ignore or reject Him)? Do you want God’s instruction (or do you think it is to restrictive, boring, or irrelevant)? Is God your refuge (or do you seek refuge in something else)? Are you living a life that glorifies God (or a life that centers on you)? After you die, what is your eternal destiny (or do you even care)?
