1 In response to video: “The west – Episode Two: Empire upon the Trails” (5:00 – 16:00), answer following questions in your notebooks: What were the motivations of the Mountain Men coming to the American West? (2) Describe the lifestyles of the Mountain Men, and what usually happened at the yearly rendezvous? (3) What does Lone Dog’s Winter Count depict? (4) What does the video present regarding the Lakota peoples and their connection to the Black Hills?

2 Adding new territory always adds to tension between North and South and leads to the questions –
(1) Will this new territory allow slavery? and (2) How do we maintain the balance between free and slave states?

3 Northwest Ordinance, 1787 Slavery prohibited in “Northwest Territory” as the Ohio River becomes the boundary dividing free and slave states. New standard for state admission.

Third, is the era of gold prospecting in the West, which technically happens after the beginning of travel on the overland trails. This era begins w/ discovery of gold in California in 1849. Fourth, is the era of railroad expansion in the West, which accelerates after the Civil War.
