1 AP Human Geography Chapter 2: Population

2 Lesson 1 Demography

3 Demography The study of population
They do this through various metrics TFR (Total Fertility Rate) The average number of children born to a woman of childbearing age Sustained growth = 2.1

4 Population Density Measure of population relative to land size
Arithmetic Population Density Population/Area general Physiologic Density Number people per unit of arable (agriculturally productive) land More accurately depicts population pressure

5 Population Distribution
Descriptions of locations on the Earth’s surface where individuals or groups live Dot Maps – one dot represents a number of a population Four major population regions

6 East Asia Population: 1,546,300,000 Concentrated in China (1.35 billion) Cause of Population Density: Coastal areas and the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers Agricultural Help produce food for the burgeoning population

7 South Asia Population: 1,485,500,000
Concentrated in India (1.23 billion) Cause of Population Density: Coastal areas and the Ganges and Indus River Valleys Agriculture

8 Europe Population: 584,700,000 Concentrated in north and Central Europe but extending west to the Atlantic and East into Russia Cause of Population Density: Industrialization: cities formed around manufacturing and coal fields

9 North America Population: 329,400,000
Concentrated in the Eastern United States Cause of Population Density Megalopolis: coalescing of large cities Boston, Philadelphia, New York City, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. Over 20% of US population

10 Census Periodic and official count of a country’s population
Exact counts or samples used U.S. uses exact counts Every 10 years April 1, 2010 results - 308,745,538 Varying reliability Can impact disadvantaged groups Less money and programs Less representation Costs and logistics make this difficult for poorer countries

11 Leading Population Regions 4-Square
Directions: Fold your paper into 4 squares/rectangles. Label each square one of the four leading population regions (Text pages 40-43). Use the information on these pages and Appendix B to respond to the following prompts. Rank this region in terms of population density compared to the other 3 and give the 2006 population estimate. Where are the centers of population in the region? What factor have influenced the population distribution in this region? Draw each region or leading population center.
