3 TODAY’S OBJECTIVE I can explain that solar energy (sun) is the driving force of the water cycle. I can describe and label all stages of the water cycle (Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, transpiration, runoff, infiltration) I can describe phase changes of H20 that may occur in each stage of the water cycle.

5 THE WATER CYCLE Water Cycle/Hydrologic Cycle: The change of water from one state to another and its movement from one place to another on Earth. Driven by the sun’s energy

Every day, trillions of liters of water evaporate from the ocean

8 THE WATER CYCLE 2 Water also evaporates rivers, lakes, and other sources on land. Plants give off water vapor as well (transpiration)

10 Evaporation Evaporation is the process by which a liquid changes into water vapor (gas) due to heating

11 Transpiration Transpiration is the release of water vapor into the air (evaporating) from a plant’s leaves. Water in the leaves change to water vapor (gas) due to heating.

14 THE WATER CYCLE 3 Water vapor condenses into clouds, which are made from water droplets and dust.

15 Condensation Condensation is the change of state from water vapor to liquid, through cooling.

17 Clouds Clouds: As water vapor evaporates into the atmosphere, it will become cooler and condense into water droplets. These water droplets mix with air molecules and tiny dirt particles to become clouds.

19 THE WATER CYCLE 4 Water from clouds fall back to earth’s surface as precipitation.

20 Precipitation Precipitation delivers atmospheric water back to the Earth’s surface as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. Occurs when clouds become too heavy with water droplets.

22 THE WATER CYCLE 5 When water reaches the ground, many things happen to it: Runoff Accumulation Infiltration (groundwater) Evaporation

23 Run-off 1. Water runs down hills due to gravity over surface

24 Accumulation 2. Water collects in oceans, rivers, lakes, streams

25 Infiltration 3. Water is soaked into the soil or ground (groundwater).

26 4. Water is evaporated back into the atmosphere
