Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece with a population of inhabitants, is one of the oldest cities in Europe.

5 Thessaloniki is the metropolitan centre of Northern Greece with a history of 2,300 years.

6 Thessaloniki resonates the wealth and magnificence of the Byzantine Empire.

7 A Historic City Thessaloniki was founded around 315 BC by the King Cassander of Macedonia It was named after his wife Thessalonike, a sister of Alexander the Great. Thessalo-nike means the “Victory in Thessaly".

8 A Historic City It is here that the Apostle Paul first brought the message of Christianity (50 A.D.) and Demetrius, a Roman officer died in martyrdom (303 A.D.), thus becoming the holy patron of the city.

9 Thessaloniki Today Thessaloniki has been established itself as the second most important city in the whole of Greece and as the major metropolitan center of Northern Greece.

12 Places of Attraction As a historic city Thessaloniki presents a series of monuments from Roman and Byzantine times. It is well – known from its White Tower dating from the middle of the 15th century in its present form.

14 Places of Attraction Also, it is known for its Churches, particularly the church of Agia Sophia and the church of Aghios Dimitrios, the patron Saint of the city.

15 Places of Attraction The thermaikos gulf on one side and the mountains on the other side surround it. This gives the city an elongated shape.

16 Places of Attraction The citizens of Thessaloniki are famously sophisticated and fashion conscious, and the shops reflect that, as well as the bars, restaurants and clubs.
