1 HUMAN REPRODUCTION and DEVELOPMENT
Chapo Biology 1 Honors

2 ANATOMY of the reproductive systems
Using a TEXTBOOK, fill in the diagrams for both male and female reproductive anatomy on your power notes. 

3 KEY – Female Reproductive Anatomy

4 KEY – Male Reproductive Anatomy

5 What is the reproductive system?
A collection of specialized organs, glands and hormones that help produce a new human being. Females and males may sexually reproduce after puberty occurs. HORMONES USED: Males = testosterone Females = estrogen

6 FEMALE SYSTEM FUNCTIONS OF THE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM:
EGGS are produced (ova) Provides a place for an embryo to develop Delivers new human being

7 FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE PART
FUNCTION OVARIES Produces EGG CELLS and releases them during menstruation FALLOPIAN TUBE Egg cells travel here to be FERTILIZED by sperm ***ZYGOTE –the first cell of a new human being with 46 chromosomes UTERUS Also known as the WOMB. Fertilized eggs travel here to stay and develop until birth.

8 PATHWAY OF THE EGG TO THE UTERUS IN FEMALES
2. FALLOPIAN TUBES (egg is FERTLIZED) 3. UTERUS (zygote stays here to develop Into a fetus for 9 months) 1. OVARY (egg is released)

9 **PATHWAY FROM FERTILIZATION TO BIRTH
OVARY – egg released FALLOPIAN TUBE – egg fertilized UTERUS – develops for 3 trimesters CERVIX – dilates before birth VAGINA – baby is delivered HOW CAN YOU REMEMBER THIS ORDER?

10 MALE SYSTEM FUNCTIONS OF THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM: Produce SPERM
Deliver sperm to unfertilized egg

11 MALE REPRODUCTIVE PART
FUNCTION TESTES Immature sperm production (immature = cannot be used to fertilize an egg yet) EPIDIDYMUS Sperm travels here to become MATURE. Can be stored here VAS DEFERENS Protects the sperm (think deferens = defense)

13 So, what happens after an egg has been fertilized?
A zygote forms and begins to develop in the uterus. QUESTION: HOW MANY WEEKS DOES IT TAKE TO FULLY DEVELOP A NEW HUMAN BEFORE BIRTH?

14 What happens during the 3 trimesters of pregnancy?
FIRST TRIMESTER WEEKS 1-12 Heart beat detected (5 weeks) Becomes FETUS (9 weeks) Organs begin to form (heart, brain, liver, kidney, pancreas) Limbs, finger and toes develop Hair, fingernails and toenails develop

15 What happens during the 3 trimesters of pregnancy?
FIRST TRIMESTER SECOND TRIMESTER WEEKS 1-12 Heart beat detected (5 weeks) Becomes FETUS (9 weeks) Organs begin to form (heart, brain, liver, kidney, pancreas) Limbs, finger and toes develop Hair, fingernails and toenails develop WEEKS 13-27 Continued development of joints, bones, skin and brain Eyes blink and lashes form Movement Breath amniotic fluid to STRENGTHEN LUNGS Swallow amniotic fluid = urine

16 What happens during the 3 trimesters of pregnancy?
FIRST TRIMESTER SECOND TRIMESTER THIRD TRIMESTER WEEKS 1-12 Heart beat detected (5 weeks) Becomes FETUS (9 weeks) Organs begin to form (heart, brain, liver, kidney, pancreas) Limbs, finger and toes develop Hair, fingernails and toenails develop WEEKS 13-27 Continued development of joints, bones, skin and brain Eyes blink and lashes form Movement Breath amniotic fluid to STRENGTHEN LUNGS Swallow amniotic fluid = urine WEEKS 28-40 Grow larger in size (normal range 7-9 pounds) STRENGTHEN LUNGS Respond to light and sound Born!
