2 Language Language is more than communication
Language shapes our perception in reality Edward Sapir and his student Benjamin Whorf said that language predetermines what we see in the world around us. You ----Your language----Reality

3 Perception Our culture through colours guides us in seeing the spectrum in terms of the arbitrarily Different cultures may divide up the spectrum in different ways

4 Defining Colours Sapir and Whorf found out that naturally determined that the colours to us are segments of reality Our culture prepares us to view it this way. Eg. (Black will always be black to us. Red will always be red) As the environment changes culture and language typically will change, but our perception of the object won’t change

5 Cultures interests and concerns
An example of terminology used by a culture is how Canada has 13 terms for different conditions of snow In contrast California only has two (ice, snow)

6 orientation A group of aborigines don’t have words for left, right, front, and back, instead they used compass directions E.g. “ I am standing southwest of my sister” rather then “I am standing to the left of my sister”

7 Ethnoscience Ethnoscientists - have made useful distinction in regards to ways of describing categories of reality Visitors bring their own culture’s categories and interpret everything in those terms, however that means there will be little understanding of the culture they are visiting Visitors should suspend their own culture perspective in order to truly learn the categories of reality in the new society.

8 Ethnoscience Con’t They also define two different approaches as being Etic and Emic Etic categories involve a classification according to some external system of analysis bought in by the visitor E.g. define a new species Emic categories involve a classification according to the way in which members of a society classify their own world
