2 The Thirteen Colonies:
Thirteen American colonies Three groups: The New England colonies, the middle colonies, and the southern colonies.

3 The New England Colonies:
The Middle Colonies: The Southern Colonies: Agriculture Large Plantations/ Slave labor Tobacco Small farms Wood products Fishing Shipbuilding Trade center Skilled craftsmen Shopkeepers Raising livestock Farming:Grain/corn Trade center Fishing

4 Taxation: The British spent more than 82 million pounds ($5 billion) in the seven year war. Taxes were put in place for the thirteen colonies to pay.

5 Historical Perspective:
British Government: The British government felt that because of their victory also benefiting the colonists that they should have to help pay for the war. Colonists: Representatives from every colony felt that the British did not have the right to tax the colonists.

6 Resistance: The colonists started retaliating against the taxes.
“Boston tea party” in 1773 was when rebels boarded ships in the harbour and threw chests of tea into the sea.

7 The Ohio Valley: The thirteen colonies, Canadiens, and the First Nations all wanted the Ohio valley. The British had the power to choose who got it.

8 Historical Perspective:
The Québec Act 1774: Historical Perspective: Québécois: They loved everything about it. First Nations: Were okay with most of the changes so they didn’t have a problem. British North Americans: Hated EVERYTHING and felt it only benefited the Québécois.

9 The American Declaration Of Independence:
Both the taxes and the Québec act made the British North Americans very mad. Representatives of the thirteen colonies held a meeting in 1776. On July 4, 1776 they declared that the United States Of America was an independent nation.

10 Loyalists: When the revolutionary war broke out the American society was divided between patriots and loyalists. The loyalists did not support the war. When it became clear that the Americans were going to win the loyalists had nowhere to go. The British offered free land in Québec, Nova Scotia, and what is now Prince Edward Island for the loyalists.

11 The Treaty Of Paris: Once the Americans win the war, the two sides had to find a way to find peace with each other. The second Treaty of Paris was signed on September 3rd, 1783.

12 Major terms of the treaty included:
Britain recognizing the American Independence. The United States got control of the Ohio valley region. Americans could fish in the coastal waters of Québec and other British colonies. British troops had to leave the United States. Loyalists couldn’t be prosecuted anymore and their property was returned.

13 How is the U.S affecting Canada:
Britain is trying to take more control over Canada after they lost America. For example advertising Québec as a place for the loyalist refugees to live. The loyalists settling there and good and bad effects. Also the loyalists settlement influenced the politics and culture of Canada.
