1 The Many Different Types of Cells in Your Body

2 DO NOW… Learning Target: I can describe the different types of cells in the human body and understand their function. Question: What is the difference between an adaptation and a response to a stimulus? DO NOW…

3 Concept 2: Cell Introduction
Fill in the following table and put into your class notebooks. List the types of cells, structure and function. You may also choose to draw a picture to help remember the type of cell. Type of Cell Structure Function And Where Found

4 Your Body…. …is composed of trillions of cells
…has hundreds of different processes going on at all times. …needs different types of cells to perform all these processes. …has over 200 different types of cells

5 Cell Structure and Function
Structure: Cells are shaped in many different ways according to the job they have to perform. Function: The job that each cell does for the body is called its function. Cells work together as tissues and organs

6 Red Blood Cells Found in the blood
Smooth, rounded cells can fit through small blood vessels Carries oxygen to all parts of your body Made in the bone marrow Live around 120 days Why donut shaped? ** disc increases the surface-area-to-volume ratio for faster exchange of gases ** red blood cells can literally squeeze through narrow vessels by changing shape.

7 White Blood Cells Found in the blood
Cells of the immune system —called leukocytes Five types of WBC’s for different disease fighting jobs Some types of white blood cells live for only a few hours…up to a few days.

8 Bone cells (Osteocytes)
There are 5 types of bone cells. They do different jobs such as repair breaks, cause growth, and maintain healthy bone tissue. Bone cells also help regulate mineral levels in the body

9 Muscle cells There are three different types of muscle cells. Their shape and function depends of where in the body they are found

10 Cardiac (Heart) muscle cell
Found in the walls of the heart Striated (banded pattern for being able to contract) Cells contract together to pump blood throughout your body

11 Skeletal muscle cell Found in the skeletal muscles— made of long fibers that contract to move bones Voluntary movement Many nucleii in each cell

12 Smooth Muscle Cells Found in many places in the body such as the digestive tract, inside arteries and hollow organs Involuntary and can contract for long periods of time; contractions reduces size of structure

13 Three Layers of Skin Cells
Epidermis: Outermost layer, waterproof and protective Skin cells may only last a month.

14 Nerve cells Processes and transmits information by electrical and chemical signals through dendrite, cell body, and axon Found in brain, spinal chord and nerves of the body Nerve cells don’t replicate and can last a 100 years!

15 Sperm and Egg Found in the ovaries (egg) and testes (sperm)
Important for reproduction of species

16 These are only a few of the hundreds of cell types in your body!!

17 QUIZ TOMORROW!! Time for some review!!!
