2. Background to Zechariah
Date: BC (2nd – 4th yr. of Darius)
Contemporary with Haggai (Haggai 1:1)
Zechariah was a priest
His grandfather was Iddo, chief of a priestly family who returned to Jerusalem after Babylonian Captivity (Nehemiah 12:4, 16). Zechariah’s father was Berechiah.
Apocalyptic in nature

3. Major Messages in Zechariah
The building and glory of Zerubbabel’s temple (1:16; 4:8-10; 8:9)
The coming of the Messiah – The Priestly King who would rule God’s people (9:9, 10)
Zechariah 6:13, He “…shall sit and rule on His throne; So He shall be a priest on His throne”

4. It Shall Come to Pass…In that Day
Phrases often used by Zechariah
“It shall come to pass” occurs 7 times. (Zechariah 6:15; 8:13; 13:3, 8; 14:6, 13, 16)
“It shall be” occurs 8 times. (Zechariah 12:9; 13:2, 4, 8; 14:7, 8, 9, 17)
“In that day” occurs 19 times (Zechariah 2:11; 3:10; 9:16; 12:3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11; 13:1, 2, 4; 14:4, 6, 8, 9, 13, 20, 21)

5. “IN THAT DAY” 1. 2:11 Many nations shall be joined to the Lord. 2.
3:9, 10
The Lord will remove the sin of the land; everyone will invite his neighbor. 3.
9:16
The Lord will save the flock of his people.
When these passages are taken together, Zechariah is clearly describing a period of time that began with the first coming of the Messiah, NOT THE END OF THE WORLD!

6. “It Shall Come To Pass”
Zechariah is not speaking of things yet to come still today.
Zechariah was prophesying of things that would occur 500 years after his time, when Jesus came the first time.
THESE THINGS DID COME TO PASS!
Fulfilled prophecy validates the INSPIRATION OF THE SCRIPTURES! (2 Peter 1:20-21), and the Kingship of Jesus Christ!

A temple that was built by Christ and in which He is High Priest.
