3 motivation & objective concept modelling first steps & next steps
topics motivation & objective concept modelling first steps & next steps discussion GeoValML | Eberhard Kunz, Nebojsa Balic

4 motivation & objective
determination of soil- and rockmechanical parameters and values: parameters and values of soils and rocks are important for every building project the surveys of the parameters are time and cost-intensive. the scattering of values of determined parameters can be high in consequence of sampling, test procedures or geogenic reasons “comparable experience” (Eurocode 7 Geotechnical design - Part 1): the term “comparable experience” is defined as documented or other clearly established information related to the ground being considered in design, involving the same types of soil and rock the selection of characteristic values for geotechnical parameters shall be based on results and derived values from laboratory and field tests, complemented by well- established experience GeoValML | Eberhard Kunz, Nebojsa Balic

5 motivation & objective
public authorities and universities maintain database systems or local data repositories a consolidated data collection or database system to be used for validation is not available the necessary infrastructure is not existent a standardized format for the geotechnical parameters would help the exchange of heterogeneous and disperse geotechnical values and parameters stored in the in heterogeneous database systems GeoValML | Eberhard Kunz, Nebojsa Balic

6 concept keep an eye on: data security expandability user demand
parameters, values schema new standard liability privacy licence (CC BY ??) technology plausibility check operating costs GeoValML | Eberhard Kunz, Nebojsa Balic

7 concept for the implementation of the GeoVal database the generic schema by “observations & measurements” (O & M) will be used the schema was transferred to the standard DIN EN ISO 19156: (Geographic information - Observations and measurements). there are some adaptations necessary to match the parameters and values to the generic schema matching the geotechnical part from the data to the relevant feature types and classes of O & M advantages to use O & M – schema: International Standard standardized generic schema generally accepted GeoValML | Eberhard Kunz, Nebojsa Balic

8 concept data sets geotechnical values and parameters  results from laboratory tests (strength, stiffness, classification, …) derived geotechnical values and parameters  homogeneous area German construction contract procedures (VOB) geotechnical field measurements (density-log, shear wave velocity, CPT…) data for further development of constitutive laws GeoValML | Eberhard Kunz, Nebojsa Balic

9 concept spatial data: point in 3D (laboratory tests)
line in 3D (laboratory tests / field test like CPT) plane area in 3D (homogeneous area) volume  (BIM - Building information modelling / homogeneous area) GeoValML | Eberhard Kunz, Nebojsa Balic

10 concept sampling … exploration point drilling point
subsample depth exploration point drilling point exploration path borehole path sample from – to or (mid)point sampling point / line / volume? triaxial test (four subsamples) watercontent (one subsample) lime content (one subsample) laboratory test (n subsamples) GeoValML | Eberhard Kunz, Nebojsa Balic

13 modelling geotechnical parameters and values (draft) – examples determination of water content standard: DIN EN ISO : boundary condition: 107,5°C (drying temperature), … parameters and values: 25,8% (watercontent), … classification standard: DIN 18196: (or ASTM….) boundary condition: - parameters and values: TM (medium plastic clay) determination of particle size distribution standard: DIN EN ISO : boundary condition: - parameters and values: GeoValML | Eberhard Kunz, Nebojsa Balic

14 modelling geotechnical parameters and values (draft) – examples consolidated triaxial compression test on water saturated soils calculations for effective shear strength (a minimum three subsamples are needed) standard: DIN EN ISO : boundary condition: calculation specification parameters and values: 32,5° (effective friction angle) ,8 kN/m² (effective cohesion) Subsamples (data of n subsamples) boundary condition: 500 kN/m² consolidation stress kN/m² backpressure kN/m² confining pressures parameters and values: 420 kN/m² maximum of (s1-s3)/ ,8 % (strain at the maximum of (s1-s3)/2 ) ….
