Humans crossed a land bridge over the Bering Strait into what is now Alaska over 11,000 years ago Some migrants may have come by sea from Asia; thus they had to use boats; studies have shown that other countries had been populated that way (Japan, Australia) DNA evidence suggests that not all people had Asian characteristics: European or African

5 Why do historians so often differ?
Historical disagreements are the essence of understanding history Reasons: Facts have to be assigned meaning. That meaning can only be determined with “spotty” evidence which creates different interpretations Historians disagree over what that meaning may be because of biased perspectives (political, cultural, types of methodology) Historical interpretations change in response to the time in which history is written Thus, historians answer historical questions differently Historiography: how historians study and interpret the past Handout:
