Mrs. Williams Second Grade Classroom News September 25, 2017 Dear Second Grade Parents, SPELLING: Due to some technology issues, we will continue with the same set of spelling words as last week. Students will be learning how to use spelling city and other spelling choice routines this week. Here is the READING TIP of the week: TALK ABOUT BOOKS: Retell exciting stories at the dinner table. Encourage your child to share his or her favorite parts. Please contact me if you have any questions! Sincerely, Mrs. Williams Reading: We will be learning about the main idea and supporting details in a story. A main idea is the most important idea in a story. Please, continue to talk about the plots of the stories your child is reading at home (Beginning, Middle, End) Grammar: We will be learning about 4 types of sentences and their punctuation. (Questions, Statements, Exclamations, and Commands). Important Dates: Wednesday, October 4th - Picture Day Friday, October 6th - No School (Professional Development for Teachers.) Writing: We will continue launching our Writing Workshop. In the first unit the students learn the routines of writing workshop. This year we want students to see themselves as authors and members of a writing community. Spelling: Blue: saw, socks, soap, seal, horse, house, ham, hose, shirt, ship, sheep, shark, shell, shop, shed Red: last, glass, fast, snap, ask, sack, grass, hand, mad, bat, make, face, same, gate, name, page, rake, came, whale, made, what Purple: play, say, pray, gray, slave, glass, nail, raise, stand, trade, clay, stay, brave, aid, taste, shape, grain, may, past, gain, they, tray, day Green: net, pet, jet, wet, beg, leg, peg, hen, men, pen, ten Science: Students will take a pre-test on Structure and Properties of Matter. Math: Students will continue working on writing their numerals through 1,000 without errors. They will also be practicing skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, & 10’s from random numbers. Social Studies: Students will be exploring the question : “Why do people live in communities?” -To be safe -To get their basic needs - To live, work and play Remember, if you bring a snack to school, make it a healthy one!
