2 Connect 5 Minutes Focus on lesson planning using "building blocks" for effective instruction. Refer to last year's PD around writing lesson objectives (a.k.a. learning targets) -- at the foundation. LMS have just learned more about another component for effective instruction: Formative Assessment (Justin & Val's session)

4 Pre-Assessment Building Blocks of Effective Instruction
5 Minutes Will begin by reflecting honestly on current level of knowledge/skill for these lesson criteria (use continuum posters with sticky notes) What trends do you see in the data? What surprises you? What doesn’t surprise you? How could you use this formative assessment strategy with your students? Advanced Proficient Developing Knowledge/Skill Level

5 Building Blocks of Effective Instruction
5 minutes Today we are going to focus on the essential building blocks. This is not an inclusive list; other lesson components will be addressed in future PD, e.g. small group models. Which section has the most information? What does that mean for you, your students, and your lessons? What do the first 3 blocks have in common (Learning Targets, Assessment, Learner Centered Instruction)? How will this impact your planning/co-planning?

6 Analyzing a Sample Lesson Plan
5 minutes Today we are going to focus on the essential building blocks. This is not an inclusive list; other lesson components will be addressed in future PD, e.g. small group models. Which section has the most information? What does that mean for you, your students, and your lessons? 8 Objective? Students will find and check out an eBook that interests them by using the Destiny library catalog. Students will be able to locate and use eBooks in order to explain how their features are useful for interacting with a text. Students will be able to use eBooks proficiently to complete the Independent Reading Project assignment in English class. 11 Application Review your lesson plan and identify the existing Building Blocks. Enhance your lesson plan by incorporating missing Building Block elements. Identify and plan specific formative assessment strategies in your lesson plan. 30 Minutes

5 Minutes What trends do you see? Did you personally move on the continuum? Advanced Proficient Developing Knowledge/Skill Level

13 Reflection 3- List three revisions you made to a lesson plan based upon the learning this afternoon. 2- Identify two potential benefits of incorporating the Building Blocks of Effective Instruction. 1- Write one lesson objective you revised or created to demonstrate the expectations of the Learning Target Building Block. 10 Minutes Complete and turn in on an index card.
