1 The Big Stories of the War of 1812.
There are some dewwwwwwwwwsies.

2 Burning of the White House
The war had pretty much been going back and forth with neither side gaining any meaningful advantage. The British were marching to Baltimore, an important port city, with the intent of capturing it. On the way they stopped by Washington D.C………….

3 James and Dolly So James Madison was not at the White House because intelligence was telling him it was a little too hot for him to be there. His wife Dolly, however, decided to stay behind and have a party. (Because that’s how Dolly does).

4 British Troops are close!
With the British Troops within ear shot (she could hear cannons firing) Dolly has to run out of the house. But before she leaves, she grabs this huge painting of old George Washington.

5 British Troops arrive They arrive and burn down the White House.
But not before eating all the delicious food Dolly had put out for the party! What a fun time that must have been for those soldiers!

6 What a remarkable woman that Dolly Madison was……
Let’s do some further research into her life! After reading the hand out, and conducting some of Your own research on Dolly, find two other first ladies To compare her to. You should create two t-charts That compare the accomplishments of each.

7 The Star-Spangled Banner
So, this really good doctor, Dr. Beanes, is kidnapped from Washington by the British soldiers and he is held on one of their ships in Baltimore harbor. Francis Scott Key, a young lawyer, is sent to go negotiate his release. He is successful, however he has overheard the British plans to begin the bombing of Ft. McHenry that evening. The British force him to remain on the ship until the battle is over.

8 The Song He writes a poem as he is witnessing the battle.
The poem takes place in the morning, while the smoke is clearing, and he is straining to see if the American flag was still flying over Ft. McHenry. If it was, that would mean the Americans had successfully fought off the British attack.

9 Treaty of Ghent It was essentially an armistice, which is an agreement to stop fighting. Nothing was solved with regards to impressment, the original reason for going to war in the first place. The end. Or is it…………..?

10 The Battle of New Orleans
The biggest battle of the war was actually fought AFTER the treaty was signed! Can you believe it! This battle is where Andrew Jackson really makes a name for himself. The Americans were vastly out numbered, but Jackson was able to pull off the victory while suffering very little casualties.

11 What a great battle! Let’s do some more research on it, shall we…….
Who?- how many American troops and how many British troops Why?- Why were the British attacking New Orleans? How?- How did they attack, and how was Jackson able to be successful?
