1 Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures

2 Elements Elements are pure substances that can’t be broken into a more simple substance What is another name for a particle? Atom A pure substance is a substance made of only one type of particle.

3 What are characteristic properties?
Physical and chemical properties that are used to describe a substance. Elements are categorized into three areas: Metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. semiconductors, like both metals and nonmetals. dull, poor conductors, brittle lusterous, conductive, ductile, malleable

4 Periodic Table of the Elements

5 Two or more elements that are chemically combined.
Compounds Two or more elements that are chemically combined. Because they are chemically combined, compounds have characteristics completely different than the elements that form them.

6 Mixtures Two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
Mixtures can be physically separated by: Or you can just pick out the stuff you don’t want. distilling or evaporating a centrifuge

7 Examples of Mixtures tossed salad ketchup pizza blood
salt or sugar water

8 Solutions A solution is a mixture that appears to be a single substance (homogeneous mixture i.e. salt or sugar water) Solute is the substance that is dissolved (salt or sugar) Solvent is what the solute dissolves in (water)

9 Heterogeneous Mixture
Unlike homogeneous mixtures, the particles in heterogeneous mixtures can be seen pizza, salad, raisin bran, italian dressing, snow globe, etc.
