6 The Cost of Following Jesus (Matthew 8:18-22)
18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

7 Christian vs. Follower of Christ
What is a Christian? A person who pertains to, believes in, or belongs to the religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ  Acts 11:26 (It was at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians.) What is a follower? A person who imitates, copies, or takes as a model or ideal Therefore one can be a Christian but not necessary a follower of Jesus Christ

8 What does it mean to follow Jesus?
To live in total obedience and not by human wisdom (v18)

11 Isaiah 55:8-9 8“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. 9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

12 1 John 5:3 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome

13 What does it mean to follow Jesus?
To live in total obedience and not by human wisdom (v18) To live in total faith and not rely on the things of the world (v19-20)

14 Matthew 8:19-20 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

16 Matthew 10:9-10 9 “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts—10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.

17 How to live a life of faith
Example of two heroes of faith Abraham

18 Hebrews 11:17-19 17 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” 19 Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.

19 How to live a life of faith
Example of two heroes of faith Abraham Held on to the promises of God Had confidence in God’s power Moses

20 Hebrews 11:24-26 24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25 He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.

21 How to live a life of faith
Example of two heroes of faith: Abraham Embraced the promises of God Had confidence in God’s power Moses Chose to be identified with God’s people instead of Pharaoh’s house Chose to be mistreated instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin Chose God’s eternal reward over the treasures of Egypt

25 The life of an average ‘Good Christian’ (Jesus is a large part of their life)

26 Make Jesus a part of your whole life

27 1 Corinthians 10:31 31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

28 Isaiah 26:3-4 3You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! 4 Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock.

29 FOOD FOR THOUGHT: What does it mean to follow Christ?
1 To live in total obedience and not by human wisdom Are you willing to obey God even when things don’t seem to make sense in your human wisdom? 2. To live in total faith and not rely on the things of the world What hinders you from walking in faith and stepping outside your comfort zone? Like the heroes of faith are you looking heavenward or is your focus on the things of the world? 3. To live in total surrender and make Jesus the only priority What do you need to entrust to God or let go of? Are you seeking to glorify God in every aspect of your life?

30 The cost that Jesus paid
The greatest cost is not what you pay, but what Jesus first paid for you. For our sake, Jesus: Left the glory of heaven Became a man Was despised and rejected Died on the cross Was separated from God Rose again so we may have life

31 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

32 Galatians 2:20 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
