K-5: More prescriptive at each grade level. Teachers more directed what to teach each year providing basis for subsequent years learning Middle School: District and faculty decide sequence. All standards must be covered to provide basis for high school standards. High School: District and faculty decide sequence. All standards must be covered in the 3 years of required science. JoAnn Miller 2012

FIRST REMEMBER: The Next Generation Science Standards are not teaching boundaries, they are assessment boundaries. They are the minimum of what we want Wisconsin students to know and be able to do. Much of what is already being taught covers many of the standards BE FLEXIBLE! You may have to give up or modify long-used activities to better correlate to the new standards COLLABORATE! The standards are meant to vertically integrate knowledge and skills so that students will transfer learning from one grade or one class to the next. Their knowledge and skills are meant to develop and expand along a continuum from kindergarten through 12 th grade. JoAnn Miller 2012

Analyze current curriculum for cross-over from current state standards to the NGSS Determine content and skills which need to be added or augmented to meet the new standards Decide if the volume of material and activities which dont fit into the NGSS is practical within the school year timeframe Cull content and activities which dont fit within the NGSS or directly lead to student learning. Everything done in the classroom should maximize student learning. JoAnn Miller 2012

REFLECTIVE TEACHING: Continue to re-analyze curriculum choices as most effectively meeting standards AND leading to maximized student learning COLLABORATION: Continue to work with colleagues to bounce ideas off of, align activities, and coordinate standards coverage JoAnn Miller 2012

The teaching practices (active, inquiry-based learning and critical thinking) of the Framework are sound pedagogy – START NOW! https://sites.google.com/a/dpi.wi.gov/science-dl/home/classroom- components https://sites.google.com/a/dpi.wi.gov/science-dl/home/classroom- components JoAnn Miller 2012

NGSS scheduled for adoption at the beginning of 2013 Should be in place for 2013-14 school year Assessment to the NGSS standards will follow in a few years Teaching to the NGSS will more than amply prepare students for the interim WKCE testing in science JoAnn Miller 2012

NGSS are aligned with the CCSS to ensure a symbiotic pace of learning in all content areas. The three sets of standards overlap in meaningful and substantive ways and offer an opportunity to give all students equitable access to learning standards. Conceptual Shifts in the Next Generation Science Standards, Achieve, Inc. JoAnn Miller 2012
