2 The Campus Y UNC Center for Social Justice 30 different committees
2500 members Over alumni So, a little bit of background about the Campus Y, in case you’re not familiar. It’s the center for social justice here at UNC and it’s been around for 155 years making it the oldest student organization at Carolina. It’s also one of the largest student organizations on campus with over 30 different committees all working in varying fields of social justice from homeless outreach here in Chapel Hill to international development all over the world. They have 2500 current members and over alumni who frequently attend reunions and receive newsletters, eager to maintain their connection to the Campus Y, an organization integral to their Carolina experience. Yet information and details about this plethora of expertise and experience rooted in the Y is not easily accessible to either members or alumni as they currently have no system for organizing and searching for all of these connections. This is where you guys come in.

3 Y Connect Online onyen protected database Individual profiles
members alumni related organizations Searchable key terms Engaging visual interface The idea with this project is to bring together all of the connections the Y has to alumni, current student members and organizations nationally and internationally into a sort of internal linked in. It’s called ‘Y Connect.’ Members, alumni and connected organizations will be able to create a profile including their current and previous occupations and internships, locations worked, fields of expertise, education etc. and contact information. It will be onyen password protected. There would then be a function to search key terms.

4 User example INITIAL SEARCH: policy, education RESULTS:
Organization working in education policy Student who did teaching internship last summer alumni who is now a teacher alumni now working in education policy FILTER BY LOCATION Alumni now working in education policy in Raleigh, NC CONTACT INFO For instance, if I was student looking for a summer internship and I was interested in education policy I could type in the search terms ‘policy’ and ‘education’ to come up with all connections the Y has related to my interests, if there were too many, I could potentially narrow my search by location. I could then read a little bit about all of the options presented and see if I wanted to contact any of them. In this way, this online database tool could be used to help students connect to careers in social justice, help alumni recruit talent from within UNC and continue the positive social impact UNC has on North Carolina and the world.
