A Greek city-state An open area where people would gather and socialize and trade. A military technique whereby soldiers march and fight side by side in rows. A type of government in which power is contrilled by a small group of people. A type of government in which the general populace (people) make decisions and share power/.

5 Islands Greece is surrounded by several seas: the Ionian, Mediterranean, and the Aegean Seas. mountains Rugged hills Long coastlines They became masters of the sea and trade, eventially building boats to trade with far off lands. Ancient Greeks grew: wheat grapes barley, and olives and raised livestock like goats

Lived in Knosses, a site on the island of Crete. Specialized in trade, building ships of wood, and trading stone and pottery with places as far away as Egypt and Syria. Lasted from around 2000 bc to 1100 bc. Lived on the Greek mainland. Trade skill by and Military prowess. Navigated the seas to trade with other civilizations by using the stars. Used their military might to conquer lands along the coast of Asia, islands in the Aegean Sea and parts of the Greek mainland. Ruled during the ancient Greek “Dark Age” Conquered the Mycenaean- controlled central Greek mainland. Trade decreased which caused less wealth to flow into the area. They introduced iron tool and weapon making, which influenced Greek culture for years to come.

Boys were required to attend military training, but then free to train in any profession. Built a strong navy. Famous for their direct democracy shaping future governments. In meetings held every 10 days, Males have the right to vote. Making decisions Not women. Cared for children. Kept house suppported their husbands. Poor families moms worked. When then left the house they had to have a male escort. Less freedom than Spartan women. Education was important. Boys were educatedc Girls learned how to keep a home and learned to read and write there.

Military society run as an oligarchy. 2 kings ruled at a time, along with a council of elders and the assembly. The elders held a lot of power. Could exile or execute people. The assembly made decisions about wartime efforts. Legendary for their military military might. Fighting information. They overcome foes using ng shields, spears, and short swords. Since men were away at war, women had more freedom and could travel, own property, and inherit. However, they were not equal, could not participate in government. Education was the military, boys joined at 7. They also learned to read and write. School was hard. Learning to live off of little food and fight. Girls were trained to athletic and also manage a household.

11 Persia sought to expand their territory and began a war
Persia sought to expand their territory and began a war. Greeks revolted against thei persians around 499 BC. Athens sent warships to assist in the efforts but were defeated by the Persians under the leadership of King Darius. Sparta and Athens formed an alliance in hopes of defeating the mighty Perian Empire. During the 300’s BC Persia fell to the allied Greek foreces led by Alexander. Greece was now the Dominate power in the region..

12 Athens and Sparta tried to keep their alliance strong by forming the Delian League. But, it failed because their differences were too great. They went to war in 431 BC in an effeort to gain power over eachother. .After years of fighting they were entangled in a struggle of war. An alliance was made but eventially Sparta defeated Athens and ruled Greece for a short time.

Known for elegance. Architectural features included columns and rooms that included lines and shapes that indicated harmony, reason, and balance. This was important to the Greeks. Men acted in the plays. Dramas, tragedies, and comedies. Polytheist society- Many gods. Believed gods had power over their lives. By holding festivals, praying in temples, and performing rituals to please the gods in hopes of favors. Health, wealth, and power. The Greeks practiced sports as a form of entertainment and religious festivals. The ancient Olympic games tested strength of athletes to please Zeus- the king of the gods.

Socratic Method: a wasy of thinking whereby a teacher asks aquestions and waits for a response. Finding the answer themselves.

Is known as a great thinker and scientist. He studied the planets, tracking their movements. He started a school called the Lyceum and taught the concept of the “golden mean”- that the best way to live is moderately- between the extemes.

16 Plato was a philosopher who developed theories around government and society.
In his book The Republic, Plato stated that society was organized into three groups- philosopher kings, warriors, and the rest of the population. He believe that the most wisdom resided in the upper parts of society. It was the job of “kings”- those people in society with the most wisdom, to rule through logic. Warriors would protect society The common fold provided for everyone (food, shelter, etc.)

Pythagoras is famous fo rhis ideas about math. He developed the Pthagorean Theorem- a way to find the legths of sides of triangles.

18 Thucydides was a famous historian and general in the Peloponnesian War.
He wrote The History of the Peloponnesian War to describe the conflict. Despite suppporting the Athenian cause, he believed that history should be recorded with an impartial view to fairly represent the real events.

19 He was a physician in ancient Greece who is famous for develping the Hippocratic Oath. The oath states that doctors must act in a professional and moral way to protect the rights and lives of their patients. Hippocrates has become known as the “father of medicine”.
