1 SELF PORTRAITS Part 1

2 What is a self portrait? IDENTITY Why create a self portrait?
Vincent Van Gogh - Self-Portrait 1889 Artists would paint portraits of themselves because they were the only ones who could paint not only the outside, but what the artist was like on the inside. IDENTITY

3 What do we noticed about them?
Examples of self portraits What do we noticed about them? What can you say about the colours? How do you think Matisse feels about himself? Frida Kahlo How was this portrait made? Do you like it? What’s your opinion? Henri Matisse Andy Worhol Léopold Boilly What’s the first thing you think when looking at Frida? Do you think her portrait is honest? How does this make you feel? Why do you think it’s not in colour?

4 Examples of self portraits
Discuss these with a partner and see what ideas you come up with. Remember, think about COMPOSITION, COLOUR, EMOTION etc. Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853 – 1890)

5 Examples of self portraits
Andrew Warhol ( 1928 – 1987)

6 Examples of self portraits
Frida Kahlo (1907 – 1954) – painting the pain

7 To be able to create a portrait, you must firstly take a look at who you are.
This doesn’t mean how you look, but who you are on the inside. Your identity. Easiest way to do this, is to create a personal mind map!

8 How to create your mind map
COLOURS Are you quiet? Shy? Happy? Loud? Who are you? PERSONALITY What colours do you like? What colours do you think represent your personality? YOUR NAME FAVOURITE THINGS Is there anything you love SO MUCH that you must add to your portrait? QUOTE / LYRIC For your FINAL portrait poster, what quote or lyric would you like to add? EMOTION / ANGLE How do you want people to view you? Think about the link between what we will see and how we will feel about you when we view your final portrait. If you’re shy, would your head be down or would you be looking directly out at the viewer? If you’re outgoing, would you be covering you face with your hand?

9 Your Portrait NOT a photograph
We’re going to take a quick look at the work of Michael Sydney Moore. Your portrait is going to be realistic in style. Moore describes his work as “centered around high-realism” in portraiture. Michael Sydney Moore
