1 This Learning Routine* will Rock you
BC DC AC This Learning Routine* will Rock you *includes Only the Good Stuff# #Stuff you forgot or were never taught The Academic Weight Room Chapter 6

2 These sessions are about Study Skills
Simply doing these three routines will make a significant difference in your life

3 #TrustTheProcess

4 What is process? “Process means the flow of time and the habits and actions associated with that flow of time. Product is the outcome.” (Oakely, 101) ‘a series of actions that lead to a particular result.’ Merriam Webster.com

5 Myelination: Development of Myelin
In sport, the practice of a particular skill reinforces the neuron pathway by strengthening, literally wrapping, the myelin sheath around the axon. Athletes have more myelin wrap in particular nodes that enable skills like jumping or quickness or hitting a baseball than non athletes. Same thing occurs with an academic skill such as retention of knowledge and comprehension. When you learn using/practicing the skills taught in AWR you are strengthening the neurotransmitter pathways you are wrapping the myelin

6 Utilizing the Teachable Moment
Picture of Neurotransmitter transmission via the neurons, creating a pathway The central nervous system contains hundreds of millions of neurons which carry the information between the brain and other parts of the body. Neurons send and receive information via chemical signals called neurotransmitters This neuron shows knowledge, skills, information is transmitted in brain via electronic signals called neurotransmitters Central nervous system contains hundreds of millions of neurons which carry the information between the brain and other parts of the body. Utilizing the Teachable Moment

7 Myelination Means Skills Can be Learned
Building Myelin (Myelination) is a Process Myelin is the substance which wraps the axon, or neurotransmitter pathway More Myelin = Better Results More Repetition = More Myelin You build your skills, your knowledge, by wrapping the myelin in those neurotransmitter pathways using deliberate practice (Colvin, 103)

8 Utilizing the Teachable Moment

9 The Rock Trilogy Routines we use to Wrap Myelin
BC: Before Class DC: During Class AC: After Class

10 Before How to do a ‘scout’ before you go to class
How to have a better idea about what the professor is going to talk about key terms and concepts Quick Read Download PPT Create Flash Cards

11 During Engage: How to be an active participant
Improve Efficiency and Effectiveness Listen actively Take notes efficiently Recall during, recite right after class, review those notes tomorrow and a week later.

12 After How to Embed that information into long term memory
Quiz yourself flash cards end of chapter problems/questions Interleaving Spaced Interleaving: Research suggests that we learn best when we study for all of our classes simultaneously. That means your flash cards are intermingled, or interleaved. This random practice embeds the knowledge better than if you were to study for one class, then the next, then the next separately. Spacing means that we should study the material at different points in the process. This routine establishes the pattern that enables this spacing to occur..

13 Learning with Spacing

14 The Forgetting Curve: Learning without spacing
Retention The chart on the previous slide is a rough idea of what happens when you space your learning. As with any learning, the amount you retain drops off with time, but when you space, or come back to the learning regularly, you can regain most of that original retention. This chart shows what happens when you don’t regularly come back to the learning; you forget. Only regular review, or self quizzing, enables you to retain the information. The after class routine, or AC, says you should look at the material for 10 minutes right after class, then do your don’t know flash cards every day, your know flash cards every 3 days, and your got it down cold flashcards once a week. Days
