4 The fuel of the future has arrived. Transit – Trash – Trucking
Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) is the most environmentally friendly and cost effective fuel for the movement of the heavy-duty transportation vehicles… Transit – Trash – Trucking The three largest markets for heavy duty transportation are Transit (buses), Trash (waste haulers) and Trucking. Trucking is the most challenging of the three due to the fact that most fleets don’t have private stations and they face the highest conversion costs. RNG takes waste streams and turns it into fuel for heavy-duty transportation.

5 What is RNG & where does it come from?
RNG is renewable natural gas (methane) collected from three waste streams: Anaerobic Digesters (A/D) dairy farms Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP) Landfills and MSW diversion Why is the Carbon Intensity of fuel so important? According to Wikipedia “An emission intensity is the average emission rate of a given pollutant from a given source relative to the intensity of a specific activity; for example grams of carbon dioxide released per mega joule of energy produced, or the ratio of greenhouse gas emissions produced to gross domestic product (GDP). Emission intensities are used to derive estimates of air pollutant or greenhouse gas emissions” The lower the Ci the cleaner the fuel. “RNG has the lowest carbon intensity of any other heavy duty transportation fuel and is even cleaner than the electric grid.” We create a lot of waste. We have thousands of landfills, WWTP and dairy and hog farms. When organic waste decomposes it produces CH4 aka methane. Methane is a powerful GHG, as opposed to CO2 which is in the atmosphere for a long period of time (hundreds of years) methane is considered a short lived climate pollutant (SLCP) and is in the atmosphere for only a short period of time, so removing one ton of methane is equivalent to removing 25 to 70 tones of CO2. Carbon Intensity is like golf, the lower the value the cleaner the fuel.

6 Fuel carbon intensity includes lifecycle impacts
CNG from fossil sources has a CI of 79.46, LFG 46.42, WWTP around 11 and dairy (-250) CARB certified the carbon intensity for the AMP America’s dairy manure project This is the only capable of providing a negative carbon footprint. Low carbon intensity fuels are the key to sustainable transportation.

7 The RNG industry is rapidly investing to help meet the growing demand.
RNG Supply is Growing RNG Demand is Growing RNG supply and demand is growing in the US market. Companies are investing millions of dollars into projects all over the country. The RNG industry is rapidly investing to help meet the growing demand.

8 The RNG industry is rapidly investing to help meet the growing demand.
RNG Supply is Growing RNG Demand is Growing This slide is from an EPA presentation (website) regarding landfill gas (LFG) projects. As you can see these projects are located in every state in the country. Most of these projects are located in rural communities where it can be challenging to find good paying jobs. RNG projects create thousands of good paying jobs (waste industry). The RNG industry is rapidly investing to help meet the growing demand.

9 What are some of the benefits of RNG?
What is RNG used to make? RNG can be used to ALL other alternative fuels: RNG to hydrogen for 100% renewable H2 vehicle fuel (SMR) RNG to electricity – fuel cell, power generation 100% renewable RNG to LNG – 100% renewable RNG to CNG – 100% renewable What are some of the benefits of RNG? Provides American energy independence Creates high paying domestic clean energy jobs Captures short lived climate pollutants (SLCP) Cost effective Abundant (billions of gallons “wasted” annually) Technology evolution The fuel of the future… today The cleanest transportation fuel in the world Leaving the planet in a better place for the next generation Hydrogen can be created by electrolysis or steam methane reforming (SMR) RNG is the only source that can make ALL other renewable transportation fuels.

10 Grams of CO2 emitted per mega jeoule
Third party validation of the ultra-low carbon intensity value for renewable natural gas (RNG) confirms renewable biogas is the cleanest transportation fuel for heavy-duty applications. Thank you.
