2 British Impressment Impressment- the practice of forcing American sailors to serve in the British Navy Britain needed sailors to fight against the French who were led by Napoleon

Native Americans were angry over American westward expansion Tecumseh- Native American leader who led fight against the Americans Battle of Tippecanoe- American victory over Native American tribes which heightened tensions between US and Native Americans

4 Americans Call for War Group of Democratic-Republicans who called for war with Britain were known as War Hawks Wanted to restore national honor Retaliate against the Native Americans and British Henry Clay John C. Calhoun

5 America Goes to War President James Madison urges Congress to declare war with Britain Issue greatly divides the nation Federalists- do not want war Democratic-Republicans- want war

6 US Invades Canada In hopes of cutting off supply lines to Native Americans, US invades Canada Enormous failure

At the Battle of Baltimore, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem about the American’s victory at Fort McHenry The poem was called the “Star-Spangled Banner” Poem would become our nation’s National anthem
