5. 1.What is the function of the Endocrine System?
Produce and secrete hormones that regulate growth, metabolism, and sexual development/function

6. 3. What is a Hormone?
Definition: Targeted chemical messengers that regulate cells or organs
Hormones transfer information and instructions from one set of cells to another.
Many different hormones move through the bloodstream, but each type of hormone is designed to affect only certain cells.
Hormones are transported by the CIRCULATORY system

7. 2. What is a gland?
Glands are the organs of the endocrine system that produces and secretes, or gives off, chemicals called hormones.
They hold the hormones until the brain tells them to release the hormones into the blood stream.

8. 4. Hypothalamus
Releases hormones which stimulate the pituitary gland.

9. 5. Pituitary Gland
Stimulated by hormones from the hypothalamus. Regulates several physiological processes (including stress, growth, reproduction, and lactation)

10. 6. Thyroid Gland
Thyroid: control the rate at which cells burn fuels from food to produce energy. (metabolism)

11. 7. Adrenal Gland
Adrenal: Releases hormones in response to stress. It also increases blood pressure and heart rate when the body experiences stress. Produces adrenaline fight or flight response.

12. 8. Pineal Gland
Pineal: It secretes melatonin a hormone that may help regulate when you sleep at night and when you wake in the morning.

13. 9. Testes
Testes (male): produce sex hormone testosterone.

14. 10. Ovaries
Ovaries (female): produce sex hormone estrogen.

15. 11. Pancreas
Pancreas: produces two important hormones, insulin and glucagon. They work together to maintain a steady level of glucose, or sugar, in the blood and to keep the body supplied with fuel to produce and maintain stores of energy.

16. 12. Problems that can occur in the Endocrine System
Overactive glands: overgrowth, early puberty
Underactive glands: weight gain, late puberty, undergrowth
