Crown is the visible portion; protected with enamel
Enamel is a hard substance made of calcium
Beneath the enamel is dentin
Tissue that contains the blood vessels and nerves of a tooth
The neck of the tooth is between the crown and root

5. Keeping Your Teeth Healthy
Periodontium
The area immediately around the tooth
Made up of the gum, periodontal ligaments, and the jawbone
Support the tooth and hold it in it’s place
Plaque
Combination of bacteria and other particles, such as small bits of food
Adheres to the outside of a tooth

6. Maintaining Dental Health
Eat a well-balanced diet
Include phosphorus, calcium, and vitamin C
Reduce intake of sugary drinks and snacks
Brush after every meal and floss daily
Get regular dental check-ups
Wear a mouthguard when playing contact sports
Avoid all tobacco products

7. Tooth and Mouth Problems
Halitosis - bad breath caused by eating certain foods, poor oral hygiene, smoking, bacteria on the tongue, decayed teeth, and gum disease
Periodontal disease - inflammation of the periodontal structures caused by bacterial infection
Malocclusion - misalignment of the upper and lower teeth caused by crowding or extra teeth, thumb sucking, injury, or heredity
