Structures in All Cells:
* Cell membrane – forms the barrier to separate inside the cell from the outside environment *Cytoplasm – the filling of the cell (Jello), mostly water *DNA – found in the nucleus; blueprint of the cell *Ribosome – organelle that builds proteins; site of protein synthesis

II. Are all cells alike? A. Two main types of cells
1. Prokaryotic Cells a. Simplest type of cell. b. Bacteria c. Structure of a prokaryotic cell i. No nucleus ii. No membrane bound organelles iii. Includes: circular chromosome (DNA) and plasmids (smaller rings of DNA).
3
Prokaryotic Cells unicellular free-floating DNA (NO nucleus)
One single, circular DNA Does NOT have membrane bound organelles (like the nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, ER)
4
2. Eukaryotic Cells (Eu=”true” nucleus)
a. More complex than prokaryotic cells b. Includes protist cells, fungi cells, plant cells and animal cells c. Structure i. Chromosomes (DNA) contained within a nucleus with nuclear membrane ii. In addition to ribosomes, contains membrane bound organelles

Individual Practice Come see me for your organelle/structure
One one sheet of colored/construction paper, draw an organelle/structure 4 times. Label each one Also list its function Include whether they are found in prokaryotes or eukaryotes.

Exit Ticket How does the structure of prokaryotic cells compare to eukaryotic cells? DNA is found free-floating and unbound in which type of cell? In which cell type is a circular strand of DNA found in the cytoplasm? How are prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells similar?
