4 Summary of Results Germination rate was the highest when no magnetic field was present Germination rates were similar for the 2 magnet and 4 magnet case Although the germination rate was similar for these 2 cases, plant growth was more extensive when the magnetic field strength was lower Seeds with 6 magnets were negatively affected by the magnetic field and had a very low germination rate

5 Theories Researchers have reported contradictory results on plant growth, some showing positive growth benefits, and some showing negative Effects appear to be species specific The exact mechanisms of how magnetic fields affect plant growth are unknown, but two theories are: Magnetic fields influence the uptake and transport of Ca++ which are important in many plant growth processes Magnetic fields interfere with hydrogen bonding in water which can influence water uptake during germination

6 Further Experiments Test the calcium ions in the radish seeds by using a staining process that would reveal the calcium ions in the radish cell Dissect the germinated seeds and examine them under an optical microscope to determine any structural changes
