1 Student iPad Bootcamp Lesson 1: Safety & Security
Lesson style & delivery is at the teacher discretion, yet we ask that the content remain unchanged. Feel free to add in additional slides or teaching points that you feel your students may need, but do not delete content information.

2 Learning Target I can learn how to keep my iPad safe and secure.
Success Criterion: I can list my top 3 Do’s and Don’ts for use of the iPad.

3 What will you need to do to make sure your iPad stays safe & secure?
Brainstorm What will you need to do to make sure your iPad stays safe & secure? Choose a method for brainstorming that best suits your style. Students may possibly write a list, use sticky notes, brainstorm in small groups, or use a digital tool like or the app Socrative (send them a short answer question). The point is to get students engaged by thinking of the ways in which they will need to use their device safely & responsibly. As you go through the PPT slides, acknowledge the ones in which students already brainstormed and elaborate on them as needed.

4 Hooray! I get an iPad. Now what?
Your new bestie! You and your iPad will soon be spending a lot of time together. The following slides describe the ways in which you should treat the iPad carefully so it’s always safe & secure. Make the analogy that the iPad becomes the sole responsibility of the student. He/she will spend a considerable amount of time with the device, both in school and out of school, and as such will need to learn to be responsible with its care.

5 Should I keep it in its case?
Yes, keep your iPad in its case at all times. Do not remove your name card from the inside card slot. Keep the case in its original condition; stickers or writing are not allowed as decorations. Sorry! Demonstrate what it means to secure the corner straps. Emphasize with students the importance of keeping the case secured in binder when not in use; this is essential to preventing scratches & broken screens. At this point, students are not allowed to sticker-ize the cases. They will need to be returned in the same condition in which they were provided. It is possible that students will be allowed to provide their own choice of approved case in the future, but for now they are required to use the one provided.

6 How will I know which one is mine?
Personalize your lock screen with a picture of yourself including your First & Last name. The iPad will be checked out to you via the barcode, just like a textbook. Do not tear this barcode off or destroy in any way. At this point, you may want to demonstrate how to take a picture or image from the camera roll and turn it into wallpaper. Try opening the image in Notability to add text.

7 Can my iPad get lonely? Yes, so do NOT leave it unattended!
Keep the iPad in your possession. Do not loan it to your baby sister, your cousin’s best friend, your neighbor’s aunt, or even your classmate who wants it to take it down the hall. You are responsible for its safety & security! Storing the iPad in a car is NOT a secure location. While we recognize that the iPad may end up being used at times by family members other than the student, emphasize the overall need for the student to be responsible with the device. For example, an iPad left unattended on the kitchen table can easily be picked up by a younger sibling or knocked off by the family cat, so remind students to be cautious. They should not lend out the iPad to others for use and let it out of their sight/possession. Similarly, students need to think about a safe place to store the iPad when not in use. An iPad left out on a car seat while going grocery shopping with your parents is not a wise choice!

8 Where should I keep my iPad?
Carefully place it in your backpack while traveling to/from class & school. Store it on top of your desk/table while in the classroom. Do not set the iPad on the floor, as it is more likely to get stepped on or scratched. While at school, the iPad should be with the student at all times. iPads left on the floor are liable to get stepped on or scratched. iPads left on a desk, table, or in the cafeteria unattended could be picked up by another student and disappear. Remind students to be thoughtful about keeping the device on their possession.

9 Where should I keep my iPad?
Avoid extreme heat, cold, or liquids.

10 Where should I keep my iPad?
Times and Locations to use your iPad. Time: During Class Where: In your classroom Time: At Lunch Where: In your locker or in the library for quiet studying PBIS rules apply with iPads. Teachers always have discretion for student usage. These basic rules will emphasize safety and responsibility with iPad usage. In Commons and Hallways: No iPads! Off and Away!

11 How can I keep it clean? Use a soft, microfiber cloth, tissue, or even your t-shirt sleeve to clean the screen. Do not use harsh chemicals or cleaners. There are cleaners out on the market approved for use with iOS devices; those are acceptable cleaners to use on the screen. A harsh cleaner is not approved and will likely damage the screen and device.

12 How can I keep it clean? Use care when consuming liquids or eating food nearby. Your iPad does NOT like Cheeto hands!

13 What about charging? When fully charged, your battery will typically last around 12 hours. It is YOUR responsibility to charge the iPad for school each day. Suggestion: Plug in your iPad overnight in a place where you will remember to grab it the next morning! Your classrooms are equipped with charging carts in case you need to charge your iPad during school hours. Discuss with students how to make the best choice for where to plug-in/charge their iPad while at home. Having it right by their bed may be a temptation to stay up and play with it all night long. A better suggestion might be out on the kitchen counter or another space nearby where their backpack is stored. A fully charged iPad can last throughout an entire school day of use. Not having a fully charged iPad will limit the ability of the student to complete assignments, and as such he/she will need to complete the work in an alternative way.

14 What if I forget my iPad at home?
Loaner iPads will not be provided if you forget yours at home or if it’s not charged.

15 What if it gets scratched or breaks?
Do NOT try and fix it yourself! Go to your building SPOC for help immediately. If you have a CAPe Insurance, your fine will be covered. If not, you will be responsible for the fine to repair the iPad. This will be completed as the iPad Assurance detailed are finalized. First & foremost, tell students to not attempt to repair the device him/herself. They need to notify building personnel immediately. In many cases, a fine for the repair or replacement will be assigned to the student.
