1. Earth is a system…the interaction between matter, energy, and life.

7. B. The Atmosphere -A gaseous sphere and it envelopes the Earth.
-Allows life (traps in O2 & CO2)
-Protects from UV (O3)

8. How do human actions affect the atmosphere?
Negative
- aerosols- deplete the ozone layer - driving cars- adds excess greenhouse gases to the atmosphere - factories- (same as cars) - burning tires/garbage- adds harmful gases to the atmosphere
Positive
hybrid vehicles- decreases the amount of greenhouse gas emissions - alternative power (wind/solar)- (same as hybrid vehicles) - planting trees- absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere and adds O2

11. How do human actions affect the hydrosphere?
Negative
dumping garbage into the ocean- contaminates the water - driving boats- adds gasoline to the water which contaminates it - oil spills- contaminates water and can kill organisms in the water - building on shorelines- can contaminate water or kill vegetation in the water - overfishing- can decrease the amount of organisms in the water thereby decreasing nutrient content overall - building dams- changes water levels which can destroy habitat and reduce the amount of wildlife
Positive
sewage treatment plants- water returning to the lakes and oceans contains less contaminants - fish sanctuaries- allow a safe habitat for fish which helps them survive and contribute to the nutrients in the lake

-Solid, physical portion of earth (includes some inner layers)
-geosphere provides home for living organisms
-crust (top layer) is in a constant state of motion

13. How do human actions affect the Geosphere?
Negative
mining- strips the earth of nutrients - littering/using non-recyclables- ends up in landfills and contaminates the earth - construction- destroys natural environments, decreases drainage - pesticides- add unnatural chemicals to soils - deforestation- increases soil erosion because tree roots no longer help hold soil in place
Positive
composting- can decrease the amount of garbage in landfills - aeration- allows for air to enter soils - conservation areas and provincial parks- preserve/protect the land - planting trees- prevent soil erosion - gardening/green rooftops- regreens the landscape in urban areas

14. F. Cryosphere -portion where water is solid
-77% of earth’s freshwater is stored in ice

Volcanoes (geosphere) erupt, sending ash and gases into the air (atmosphere) and sending lava and ash down onto surrounding forests (biosphere) and human habitations (biosphere).

Earthquakes (geosphere) can damage buildings which may kill people (biosphere), as well as cause fires which release gases into the air (atmosphere). Earthquakes in the ocean may cause a tsunami (hydrosphere) which can eventually hit land and kill both animals and people (biosphere).

What’s the point?
-Your challenge is to display your understanding of Earth’s interactions through pictures & terms. Use creativity to show the complexity of how the spheres of Earth are connected!
How to draw the spheres:
Tape your 2 posters together.
Make a some pencil dot DIRECTLY in the center
Measure 10 cm in all 4 directions from the center and make a small, pencil dot.
Open the compass to 12 cm
Place the compass pointer of each of your 4 dots (Not the center on), and draw a perfect circle.
Create the same set-up on the back side.
Side #1: Illustrations
*Find clippings from magazines (national geographic, nature, outdoor, hiking, etc.) that represent each sphere Example: trees, animals for the biosphere.
*Glue pictures within the circles. The entire circle should be filled with pictures.
*Parts of the circles will connect with each other. Find clippings that are able to represent both/all of the spheres that connect.
Reminder: Make sure clippings are carefully cut out and not ripped. Please fill the circles completing with pictures (no white showing.)
Side #2: Terms
Categorize the list of terms on pg. 8 in your INB. Write them in their correct place on the back of your poster.
