1 Earth Science Bellringer
Find new seat number on the board. Place cell phone in pocket of new seat number You will have 5 minutes to finish your “Branches of ES Concept Map” Have your Earth Science newspaper article out on your desk.

2 Earth Science Pre-test
Grab the clicker number (from the back) that matches your seat number and turn it on. You will be completing an ES pre-test using the clickers. You can start when you are given a test. Turn in the test and return your clicker when you are finished *Do NOT write on the test

3 Title: Spheres of Earth Terms
On pg. 8 write the following terms in a list. ALL terms that you do not fully understand, look up the definition in the ES textbook and write a quick summary. Snow Rivers Earth Minerals Outer Core Runoff Crustaceans Pelican Bird Lakes Reservoirs Stones Humans Condensation Oceans Biosphere Wood Bat Seal Air mass Shark Algae Compounds Humidity Gases Steam Hail Elements Geosphere Plants Evaporation Fish Seagull Stratosphere Warm front Cold Front Lava Decomposers Dams Mantle Owl Insects Coral Rain Volcano Crust Trees Whale Polar Bear Atmosphere Water Soil Dolphins Rocks Ash Water Cycle Animals Ozone Layer Clouds Hydrosphere Sky Troposphere Crystals Magma Lilly pads Flying Squirrel

4 Everyday is Holiday! National Bad Hair Day!

5 Title: Earth’s Spheres notes
Essential Question (EQ): How are Earth’s spheres connected?

6 A. What Is A System? 1. Earth is a system…the interaction between matter, energy, and life. 2. Made of interacting components a. Atmosphere b. Biosphere c. Hydrosphere d. Geosphere e. Cryosphere

7 B. The Atmosphere -A gaseous sphere and it envelopes the Earth.
-Allows life (traps in O2 & CO2) -Protects from UV (O3) -Water vapor drives weather systems. Images are from the following website: Atmo means “vapor”, so this is the sphere of (water) vapor.

8 How do human actions affect the atmosphere?
Negative - aerosols- deplete the ozone layer - driving cars- adds excess greenhouse gases to the atmosphere - factories- (same as cars) - burning tires/garbage- adds harmful gases to the atmosphere Positive hybrid vehicles- decreases the amount of greenhouse gas emissions - alternative power (wind/solar)- (same as hybrid vehicles) - planting trees- absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere and adds O2

9 C. Biosphere -”Life zone,” where all living things inhabit
-other spheres provide conditions that support

10 D. Hydrosphere -contains all the water found on the planet
-all organisms need water & depend on hydrosphere

11 How do human actions affect the hydrosphere?
Negative dumping garbage into the ocean- contaminates the water - driving boats- adds gasoline to the water which contaminates it - oil spills- contaminates water and can kill organisms in the water - building on shorelines- can contaminate water or kill vegetation in the water - overfishing- can decrease the amount of organisms in the water thereby decreasing nutrient content overall - building dams- changes water levels which can destroy habitat and reduce the amount of wildlife Positive sewage treatment plants- water returning to the lakes and oceans contains less contaminants - fish sanctuaries- allow a safe habitat for fish which helps them survive and contribute to the nutrients in the lake

12 E. Geosphere -Solid, physical portion of earth (includes some inner layers) -geosphere provides home for living organisms -crust (top layer) is in a constant state of motion

13 How do human actions affect the Geosphere?
Negative mining- strips the earth of nutrients - littering/using non-recyclables- ends up in landfills and contaminates the earth - construction- destroys natural environments, decreases drainage - pesticides- add unnatural chemicals to soils - deforestation- increases soil erosion because tree roots no longer help hold soil in place Positive composting- can decrease the amount of garbage in landfills - aeration- allows for air to enter soils - conservation areas and provincial parks- preserve/protect the land - planting trees- prevent soil erosion - gardening/green rooftops- regreens the landscape in urban areas

14 F. Cryosphere -portion where water is solid
-77% of earth’s freshwater is stored in ice

15 System Interactions Volcanoes (geosphere) erupt, sending ash and gases into the air (atmosphere) and sending lava and ash down onto surrounding forests (biosphere) and human habitations (biosphere). Image is from the website: Geosphere Atmosphere Biosphere

16 System Interactions Earthquakes (geosphere) can damage buildings which may kill people (biosphere), as well as cause fires which release gases into the air (atmosphere). Earthquakes in the ocean may cause a tsunami (hydrosphere) which can eventually hit land and kill both animals and people (biosphere). Biosphere Image is from the website: Geosphere Atmosphere Hydrosphere

17 System Interactions Hurricanes (atmosphere) sweep across the ocean (hydrosphere) and onto the land (geosphere), damaging the dwellings of people (biosphere) who live along the coast. Hydrosphere Image is from the website: Atmosphere Geosphere Biosphere

19 THE END

20 Spheres of the Earth Challenge!
BIOSPHERE ATMOSPHERE GEOSPHERE HYDROSPHERE What’s the point? -Your challenge is to display your understanding of Earth’s interactions through pictures & terms. Use creativity to show the complexity of how the spheres of Earth are connected! How to draw the spheres: Tape your 2 posters together. Make a some pencil dot DIRECTLY in the center Measure 10 cm in all 4 directions from the center and make a small, pencil dot. Open the compass to 12 cm Place the compass pointer of each of your 4 dots (Not the center on), and draw a perfect circle. Create the same set-up on the back side. Side #1: Illustrations *Find clippings from magazines (national geographic, nature, outdoor, hiking, etc.) that represent each sphere Example: trees, animals for the biosphere. *Glue pictures within the circles. The entire circle should be filled with pictures. *Parts of the circles will connect with each other. Find clippings that are able to represent both/all of the spheres that connect. Reminder: Make sure clippings are carefully cut out and not ripped. Please fill the circles completing with pictures (no white showing.) Side #2: Terms Categorize the list of terms on pg. 8 in your INB. Write them in their correct place on the back of your poster.

21 Earth Science Quiz #1 Study Guide
How to prepare for the Quiz: 1. Branches of Earth Science notes (pg. 3) -Be able to match a “job/task” to a branch of Earth Science Example: Tracking a school of dolphins = Oceanography -Be able to match the definition of a branch of Earth Science to the name of each Earth Science branch 2. Earth’s Spheres notes (pg. 7) -Be able to give or match an example of an object/process that occurs in each sphere of Earth Example: tornado/weather= occurs in the atmosphere

Sit in assigned seat and place cell phone in the correct pocket. You will have 5 minutes to study… Pg. 5: Branches of Earth Science Notes Pg.7: Earth’s Spheres notes
