1 Recap of Last Week 4 Main Types of Rangelands Multiple Uses
Grasslands, Shrublands, Deserts, Woodlands and Savannas Multiple Uses Livestock vs Wildlife Recreation and Aesthetics Water Natural Resources

2 Rangeland: Why Isn’t everyone Happy
Isn’t there enough to go around?

3 People Have Different Ideas of What Rangeland Should be used for:
Multiple Uses

4 So What is Rangeland Management
The careful use and stewardship of rangelands to meet the needs of those who live on and care about these lands (Rangelands an Introduction to Wild Open Spaces) In Simpler Terms: The use and stewardship of rangeland resources to meet GOALS & DESIRES of humans So what part of this definition leaves room for interpretation?

5 So What is Rangeland Management
The careful use and stewardship of rangelands to meet the needs of those who live on and care about these lands (Rangelands an Introduction to Wild Open Spaces) In Simpler Terms: The use and stewardship of rangeland resources to meet GOALS & DESIRES of humans Our interpretations of “use and stewardship” are different because we have different ideas of goals and desires.

6 Our Goals & Desires Are all Different
Future of our Rangelands Current use or state of our Rangelands Our Opinions (Goals & Desires) Your Goals & Desires really depend on your World View which effects the future of our Rangelands

7 So what is your world view?
2)Rangelands primary use is for saleable products. Our goal is to maximize economical output. This sometimes looks like making ends meet. 1)Emphasize protecting large areas of land (from mining, timber, grazing and development)for current & future generations to enjoy 3)Protect our resources from degradation but we can still benefit from their resources & maintain multiple uses for future generation

8 So what is your world view?
1)Preservationist Emphasize protecting large areas of land (from mining, timber, grazing and development)for current & future generations to enjoy John Muir & Aldo Leopold 2)Utilitarian Rangelands primary use is for saleable products. Our goal is to maximize economical output. This sometimes looks like making ends meet. Early farmers, ranchers, loggers miners Some current big corporations 3)Conservationist Protect our resources from degradation but we can still benefit from their resources & maintain multiple uses for future generation Teddy Roosevelt & Gifford Pinchot

9 Your world view effects
Our Opinions (Goals & Desires) The future and use of our rangelands.

10 Creating the process for the future
Because Rangeland’s future has so many factors to consider, we cannot always be objective because our goals & desire different. Rangeland Management requires a more holistic approach. Multiple uses World views Personal Objectives Measuring and Monitoring Rangelands (i.e. Data Collection)

11 Rangeland Management is Interconnected
Holistic By Definition - characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole. Rangeland Management is Interconnected Multiple Uses, Worldviews, Personal Objectives Measuring & Monitoring Future of Rangelands Process & Planning

12 Future of Our Rangelands
Goals & Desires Multiple Uses Livestock vs Wildlife Recreation and Aesthetics Water Natural Resources World Views Preservationist, Conservationist, Utilitarian Personal Objectives Livestock production, open space, recreation (guided hunts), game refuge, energy production (solar, wind etc.) Measuring & Monitoring Data Collection Soil Health Vegetation Wildlife Invasive plants Water quality Process & Planning = Management Program Future of Our Rangelands

13 *Please make sure to tell me where you summarizing your information*
Answer the following questions by use of the PPT, handouts and digital research Explain what kind of worldview you have and the characteristics of that world view. You can have a blend of world views but make sure to describe the characteristics that you appreciate. Talk about 2 historical figures within that world view (You may use ONE historical figure from the ppt) Describe your goals & desires that you foresee for our rangelands. Make sure to include multiple uses and personal objectives. Explain why there is such conflict on how rangeland’s should be managed and what worldview(s) may disagree with your goals & desires. Make sure to explain why these world views would feel differently about your opinions. *Please make sure to tell me where you summarizing your information*
