1 Teacher Prep Gather up all of the materials for the lab. Put the materials in the boxes. Xerox off the lab sheet.

2 Lesson 70 Water Cycle in a Test Tube Lab * Earth Systems
Mr. Petersen Week 19 Lesson 70

3 Today’s Learning Objective
Learning Objective: Students will set up a distilling apparatus to observe water as it changes state (water cycle) and cleans itself in the process. Essential Question: Why is water called the universal solvent? Answer: Because more substances dissolve in water than in any other chemical.

4 Announcements Do not go to the computer lab tomorrow.
We will use the notebook computers in the classroom.

5 Homework Finish answering the Analysis Questions on the Lab Sheet.

6 9th Grade *Glossary List [ 1]
Ocean Ridge- Rock Slide- Hurricane- Elastic Rebound Hypothesis- Geosphere- Water Cycle- Plate Tectonics- Transparent-an object is transparent when light can pass through it or when you can see through it. For example clear glass and water are transparent. Evaporation- Condensation-

7 Background Knowledge Students should be familiar with the processes (evaporation, condensation, runoff) that water undergoes as it travels through the water cycle. The process of evaporation is too slow to be observed in a class period so it is sped up by boiling the water in the test tube.

8 Safety Students should be cautioned about safety so no accidents happen during the lab. Make sure you wear your goggles. We will count all materials after the lab. So keep track of all the stuff. Don’t let anything drop on the floor. Don’t bring the water in the test tube to a vigorous boil.

9 Procedures: Read the student sheet with the students and show them where the materials are located. Have the students make a prediction of what is going to happen. Allow the students time to set up the lab and collect the data. Discuss the outcome of the lab and help the students fill out the analysis questions.

10 Materials: Count everything: 1—test tube holder (white) 2 –test tubes
1—(Teacher has Lighter) 1—beaker 1—turkey baster (Don’t really need can poor with beaker) 1—Alcohol burner 1—rubber cork with glass tubing 1—vinyl tubing 4--Goggles

11 Alcohol Burner

12 Eye Protector (Goggles)

13 Vinyl Tube

14 Test Tubes

15 Test Tube Clip

16 Test Tube Stopper

17 Book of Matches or Teacher Has Lighter

18 Beaker

19 Turkey Baster

20 Data Start- There was no movement of water
The water in the test tube begins to move around and around in a convection current. 4- We can see steam condensing on the inside of the test tube. 6- Steam is beginning to go into the rubber tubing.

21 Data 8- water is beginning to condense in the cooling test tube.
10-There is less water in the heated test tube. 12- Steam is coming out of the top of the cooling test tube. 14- The water that is condensing in the cooling test tube is more clean and clear.

22 Clean Up Gather up and count all of the stuff in the lab kits.
Count everything: 1—test tube holder (white) 2 –test tubes 1—(Teacher has Lighter) 1—beaker 1—turkey baster 1—Alcohol burner 1—rubber cork with glass tubing 1—vinyl tubing 4--Goggles

23 Analysis (Write in complete sentences)
1. So when the water is first heated it will evaporate as it goes up the tube. 2. As it evaporates it goes into the rubber tubing as steam. Then it cools and condenses in the 2nd test tube. 3. It represents evaporation. 4. It evaporates as it is heated and it condenses as it hits the cool test tube. 5. This is when condensation happens. 6. It turned into steam and then condensed into water drops before it went into the cooling test tube. 7. In the rubber tubing. 8. At the end when the steam cools in the cooling test tube. 9. Conclusion: Write two things you learned from lab.
