1 Title of notes: Water cycle p. 7 RS

2 Bell work – 3 minutes Pick a science word from the chapter and write the definition. Chapter 14: Water resources Check the calendar and write in your planner.

3 I can describe what water recycling in the biosphere is.
Learning target I can describe what water recycling in the biosphere is. Today I am… learning about how matter is conserved in the biosphere. So that I’ll be able to… understand how water moves through the biosphere. I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can write 1-2 sentences describing what water recycling in the biosphere is.

5 How do we define water? A colorless, transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid that forms the seas, lakes, rivers, and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms.

6 Water or Hydrologic Cycle
The cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land.

7 The source of energy for the water cycle is the sun.

8 Evaporation Heat from the sun causes water to evaporate (turn from liquid into gas) and rise into the sky.

9 How does evaporation work?
Molecules (combinations of atoms) move from a liquid into a gas state when heated.

10 When water evaporates from vegetation.
Transpiration When water evaporates from vegetation.

11 How does transpiration work?
The water moves through a plant and evaporates from its leaves, stems and flowers.

12 Sublimation Goes from a solid to a gas or a gas to a solid.
There is no in between stage (the liquid stage)

13 How does sublimation work?
The south face of Mt. Everest has low temperatures, strong winds, intense sunlight, very low air pressure—just the recipe for sublimation to occur.

14 Condensation It is the change from a gas into a liquid, and is the reverse of evaporation.

15 How does condensation work?
Condensation occurs when the temperature of the air equals the amount of moisture in the air.

16 Precipitation The process which water vapor in the air condenses and becomes heavy enough to fall to the ground.

17 How does precipitation work?
It is water released from clouds in the form of rain, sleet, ice, fog, mist, snow, or hail. The precipitation that does not soak into the ground is called runoff. It moves over the land to the nearest body of water (river, lakes, streams, and ocean) Some of the water soaks into the ground and this process is called infiltration.

19 Reading Pg Write down two important facts or definitions from the reading. Bullet point the facts and write the page numbers above the facts.

20 Label the front cover Water Cycle
Water Cycle Drawing Label the front cover Water Cycle Inside create your water cycle using all the words in your notes that are underlined. There are 8 words that should be included on your diagram.
