1 Types of volcanoes

2 Unit Goals By the end of this unit, you will be able describe the composition and interactions between the structure of the earth and its systems. You will be able to describe the three types of volcanoes You will be able to relate plate boundary movements to the structure of volcanoes.

3 Bell Work

4 There are three types Shield Volcano Cinder Cone Composite Volcano

5 Shield Volcano Shaped like a long, flat dome
Built up by many eruptions of lava Sides are layers of lava Lava flows out gently and for great distances Hawaii is made up of this type of volcano. One of Earth’s most active volcanoes

6 Cinder Cone Steep sides Cone-shaped hill
Formed from eruption of cinders and other rock fragments Very explosive eruptions Magma is thick and resists flowing Eruptions have a lot of cinder and ash. SP Crater Volcano in Arizona

7 Composite Volcano Cone-shaped taller than cinder cone
Steep near top, flatter towards bottom Built of layers of lava and rock fragments Produce a lot of lava and ash These produce very explosive eruptions because gas is trapped inside the volcanoes. This is due to lava from previous eruptions plugging the holes in a volcano’s side. Mount Rainier in Washington State

8 Vent Volcanic vents are openings in Earth's crust
Where molten lava and volcanic gases escape onto the land surface or into the atmosphere. Most volcanoes have a circular central vent near their summit crater that serves as a channel for ongoing volcanic construction.

9 Crater A volcano crater is a circular depression around a volcanic vent. This is where the lava, ash and rock erupt out of a volcano. In most situations, the volcano crater is located at the top of the volcano.

10 Temperature Check 4 – I understand all the types of volcanoes. I understand how volcanoes relate to plate boundaries and how could hypothesize where they are located on earth’s surface. 3 – I understand the types of volcanoes and I understand how they are related to plate boundaries but need more time to hypothesize where they would be located on earth. 2 – I understand the types of volcanoes but I need more help relating them to plate boundaries. 1- I need more clarification on the types of volcanoes and plate boundaries 0- Even with more help I am so lost
