This training session is about the interest and anniversary badges which form part of the Girlguiding programme.
You are welcome to adapt the training session to suit your venue, requirements, learner needs and the context of your training, ensuring you’re retaining the key learning points.
The accompanying training plan contains the key learning points and activities for each slide. In these PowerPoint trainer notes you will find background context and/or suggested delivery ideas to help you as a trainer as appropriate.

2. Aim
To introduce interest and anniversary badges to Girlguiding leaders as part of the programme and to explain how they are gained and awarded. 2

3. Objectives By the end of the session participants will have:
Explored the anniversary badges available as part of the Girlguiding programme and when to award them.
Discovered the interest badges that are part of the Girlguiding programme, what is available in the different sections and how they form part of other awards.
Understood how interest badges can be gained and awarded within the Girlguiding programme.
Discussed how to support young members in gaining interest badges outside unit meetings. 3

4. Anniversary badges
A girl receives one for each year she is a member, up to 14/15 badges.
They are not section specific.
These badges celebrate and reward a girl’s commitment to Girlguiding.
There is no paper recording for these badges.
There are no other requirements other than the time a girl has been a member. 4

Possible ideas:
It might just be a five-minute discussion at the end of the evening where girls share what their plans are. They could inspire each other to try different badges.
You could look at all the badges in a theme or pick one particular badge.
You could ask girls who have previously completed a particular badge to bring in what they created for their challenges and tell the others about it.
You could invite someone in to share their collection to inspire girls to complete their ‘collecting’ badge, for example.
In the meeting before a holiday, encourage the girls to look in their badge books to pick their holiday activity interest badges.
Have an inspiration evening, eg evening on female inventors to inspire the Brownie Inventing badge, so that girls go away inspired.
Hold a market stall evening where there are different taster activities linking to the badges. 23

This is a moment for participants to pause and consider all they’ve heard and discussed during the training. Below are a list of questions that may help participants to reflect:
Write three new things you learnt.
What was the main surprise?
What will you implement first?
What is next for you? Write it down or tell the person next to you?
Write a postcard to yourself with the three key things you learnt.
Take a photo of your favourite activity or resource
Tweet #EveryGirl what you’ve learnt
Share on your local Facebook page your excitement of what you’ve learnt
