1 Explaining the Periodic Table
Section 6.7

2 Lets begin with a Video…

3 Cu Atomic Number The number of protons in an atom
It is the number in the top left corner on your PT Each element has its own UNIQUE atomic number Symbol is (Z) 29 Cu Copper 63.55

4 Mass Number & Atomic Mass
Mass number (A) – the number of protons & neutrons in the nucleus of an atom Isotopes – are atoms that have the same number of protons but different amounts of neutrons (so different masses) Atomic Mass (units are u) – the mass listed on the PT (a mixture of all the isotopes)

5 Finding the number of neutrons
Determine the number of neutrons in: number of neutrons (N) = A-Z 16-8= =4

6 Bohr Rutherford Diagrams
Show us the electron in their rings You are allowed 2 electrons on the first ring 8 electrons on every ring after Draw a Bohr-Rutherford Diagram for N-14 Determine the number of neutrons, protons & electrons (same as protons) Draw the nucleus (with # of protons & neutrons) Draw electrons on rings around nucleus

7 Today’s Tasks Bohr-Rutherford worksheet Pg. 240 #3
