1 What is Science? What does a scientist do?
Warm Up August 27, 2015 What is Science? What does a scientist do?

2 Warm Up August 27, 2013 1. What is Science?
A system of acquiring knowledge through observations and experimentation. Science is uncertain and changes with technology.

3 Warm Up August 27, 2013 2. What does a scientist do?
People who study things and try to figure out patterns and rules to explain how they work.

4 Warm Up August 28 Why do scientists perform experiments?
What are the first two steps to the scientific method? Objective: TSWU the 6 steps to the scientific method. TSWU what variables are in an experiment. Essential Question: What are the 6 steps to the scientific method? What are the 3 types of variables?

5 Why do scientists perform experiments?
Warm Up August 29 Why do scientists perform experiments? What are the first two steps of the scientific method? Essential Questions: -What is the difference between dependent variables and an independent variable? -What are the 6 steps of the scientific method? Objectives: -TSWU the difference between independent and dependent variables. –TSWU the 6 steps of the scientific method.

6 Objectives Essential Question
The students will understand the meaning of Science. The students will understand the 6 steps of the scientific method. Essential Question What are the 6 steps of the scientific method?

7 What is scientific inquiry?
any process that has the aim of augmenting knowledge, resolving doubt, or solving a problem. A theory of inquiry is an account of the various types of inquiry and a treatment of the ways that each type of inquiry achieves its aim. A request for data: interrogation, query, question, investigate A seeking of knowledge, data, or the truth about something: inquest, probe, investigate.

9 6 Steps of the Scientific Method
Identify a Problem : ask a question Form a Hypothesis : educated guess Design an Experiment: Consider variables : Independent and dependant variables Gather materials Do the Experiment and Collect the Data : Test hypothesis Analyze Data: Organize all of your information by creating graphs and charts compare information Draw conclusions: Consider questions for further investigation Other variables you did not consider

10 Variables 1. Independent Variables
Variable: Anything that “you” can change in an experiment. Variables can include materials There are three types of variables including independent variable, dependent variables, and controlled variables. 1. Independent Variables The one variable in an experiment that can change 2. Dependant variables The final outcome measured in an experiment 3. Controlled Variables: Variables that do not ever change in the experiment.
