1 The Scientific Method Way of Problem Solving

2 Controlled Experiment
A controlled experiment is one in which everything is held constant except for 1 variable.

3 Variable Anything affecting experiment
A good experiment only has one variable being tested.

4 Independent Variable variable being tested “What am I changing?”
You, the scientist, controls it and changes it.

5 Dependent Variable -variable being measured, counted, or observed.
-”What am I measuring?”

6 Constant Variables Variables that do not change (held constant).
Everything else in your experiment

7 Control Group Set-up in your experiment that does not contain the independent variable (the variable you are testing). Used for Comparison.

8 Question or Problem State the problem you are going to solve as a question. The Question must include the independent and dependent variable.

9 Hypothesis/Prediction
Your best educated guess as to what is going to happen If this is changed I.V. …then this will happen D.V. …bc of this, research based, reason. Be specific! Measurable! Can be more than one sentence

10 Procedure Step by step instructions of how to perform the experiment. Numbered List DETAILS!!!

11 Results Data and Observations Data Analysis
Tables with Data, Notes, Drawings, etc. Data Analysis Calculate Averages Compare Class Data Put into Visual Forms – GRAPHS!!!

12 Conclusion Cut and Paste Components of a Conclusion into your notebook
Scientific Method Notes are DONE!!!
