1 Life in the 13 Colonies We will synthesize and summarize information about different aspects of colonial life using a matrix and a travel journal.

2 STEP BY STEP LOOK AT PICTURE READ QUESTION READ INFORMATION
SYNTHESIZE THE INFORMATION – PUT IT TOGETHER ANSWER QUESTION ON MATRIX & SUMMARIZE THAT ASPECT OF COLONIAL LIFE MOVE ON TO NEXT STATION

3 Let’s do one together – Find 1.3K Marriage on your matrix!

4 1.3K MARRIAGE Look at the picture. Summarize facts 1st
Marriage was a community event. Ministers performed marriages. Add overhead with description! Then make some inferences and put information together Not as formal as today. Groom is happier. Now let’s listen to The song

5 When I was single, when dressed all so fine
Now I am married Lord, tho’ ragged all the time Lord don’t I wish I was a single girl again.

6 Dishes to wash and springs to go to
When you are married Lord, you’ve got it all to do Lord don’t I wish I was a single girl again.

7 When I was single, my shoes they did squeak,
Now I am married Lord, my shoes they do leak, Lord don’t I wish I was a single girl again.

8 Three little children, all lying in the bed
All of them so hungry Lord, they can’t raise up their head Lord don’t I wish I was a single girl again.

9 I wash their little feet and send them to school,
Then comes the drunkard, calls them a fool, Lord I wish I was a single girl again

10 When I was single I eat biscuit and pie,
Now I am married Lord, it’s cornbread or die, Lord I wish I was a single girl again!

11 What inferences can we make about marriage during Colonization?
Depended upon where you were but all were expected to marry: Quakers most free! Husband was master; little property rights for women. The richer the woman, the less freedom she had. Overall, many women were unhappy once they married because they were less well off.

12 Now it’s YOUR turn Start with the card at your station. Study picture
Read information Discuss question Summarize the facts and make your inference about the way of life shown, and write it down on the matrix. 5 Minutes Per station – Remember your objective… We will summarize and make inferences about different aspects of colonial life using primary sources and a matrix!
