Battery Batteries have a life of around five years. Most common problems are with terminals and clamp connections and loss of voltage, caused by constant use on short journeys without regular recharging. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Battery At every service, check that terminals have been cleaned and protected from corrosion by a layer of petroleum jelly or grease. Clamps and connections must be secure. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Battery If your premises are close to the Crematorium or Cemetery and you seldom make a long journey, a fortnightly overnight charge prolongs battery life. Modern maintenance-free batteries need no top-up. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

7 Flat/damaged tyres and wheels
Know the correct pressures for different speeds and loads, and adjust accordingly. Kerb impact can damage sidewalls and, possibly wheel rims. Both can result in slow leaks. Consult a specialist tyre dealer if any damage is visible. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

When checking tread depth, look for uneven tyre wear – the wheels may be misaligned. If any one tyre needs regular top-ups, it may have a slow puncture. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Look at the spare tyre. A worn or flat spare won't be of use in an emergency. Check that the jack and wheel-removal tools are in good condition and that the key or removal tool for locking wheel nuts are accessible. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Engine oil Check the dipstick at least every fortnight and before any long journey. Have the oil and filter changed at recommended service intervals. High oil consumption can indicate engine problems. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Power steering Fluid Ensure that the fluid reservoir is checked at every service and check it yourself once a month. Top up only using the correct hydraulic fluid as advised in the car handbook. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Power Steering Fluid Park your vehicle on level ground and, with the engine cold, remove the reservoir cap and ensure the level is between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick attached to the cap. Clean the dipstick, re-tighten the cap and unscrew to ascertain the actual level. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Power Steering Fluid "Power steering fluid is highly flammable. Do not let it come into contact with hot engine parts. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

BRAKE FLUID The brake fluid level should be regularly checked to ensure it is at the maximum level. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

BRAKE FLUID Brake fluid is highly corrosive, make sure it does not drip onto the paintwork of your vehicle. If it does, wash it off immediately with water IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

16 Automatic Gearbox Checking the Transmission fluid
This should be checked every 10,000 miles or every year. Warm up the transmission fluid by driving for at least 10miles. Park on level ground. Move the gear selector through all the positions (KEEPING FOOT ON BREAK) and into park. Leave for two minutes With the engine running, remove the dipstick and check level. To top up fluid, pour new fluid into the dipstick tube. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Water Check the coolant level regularly and top up as necessary – but only when the engine is cold. Have the antifreeze concentration checked before winter. Antifreeze not only prevents the coolant from freezing but also prevents the build-up of corrosion within the cooling system and so is important all year round. Water The coolant system works under pressure. Do not take the cap off when the engine is hot as you run the risk of scalding yourself. When changing the cap you should ensure you only use genuine parts to avoid long term damage to the system." IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Lights Check all lights weekly. Don't forget indicators, brake and fog lights. Clean lights regularly. In bad weather wipe them over with a damp cloth during driving breaks. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Wipers & Screens Wiper blades – not just to secure a Parking Ticket- they wear down over time and smear the windscreen if they become worn. Replace them at least once a year for best performance. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Wipers & Screens Windscreen - Inspect the screen regularly for stone damage and always replace a cracked or chipped screen as soon as possible. Any damage may impair vision or distract attention. Minor chips can grow and crack the glass. Some can be repaired. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Wipers & Screens Screen wash - Check and top up regularly – it's a legal requirement that the system works. Use a good screen wash additive through summer and winter – water alone won't clear oily road grime and freezes more readily in winter. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Bodywork Deal promptly with damage to bodywork to prevent rust setting in. Many cars have extended bodywork warranty schemes, which may require annual inspection at the dealer. Check that any previous owner has kept records up to date. IFD College:Operative Certificate:Training Session 3

Toolkit Check the handbook for the location of the basic toolkit for the car that should contain at least a jack and wheel removal tools. Familiarise yourself with the jacking points used to lift the car safely. If locking wheel nuts are fitted make sure that the toolkit includes the key or removal tool.
