2 Lesson Objectives Learning Goals Yesterday’s Recap Minds ON
Take up “Survey of the Living World” sheet Dichotomous Keys Practice and homework Exit Card Lesson Objectives

3 Learning Goals We are / will be learning to…
Analyze the risks and benefits of human intervention (e.g. pesticide use, fish stocking, tree planting, etc.) Analyze how climate change could impact the diversity of living things (e.g. Global warming, increase in precipitation) Become familiar with terms such as: species diversity, structural diversity, bacteria, fungi, binomial nomenclature, morphology Classify, apply, and draw dichotomous keys to identify and classify organisms according to kingdom Explain concepts of taxonomic rank such as genus, species and taxon Compare/contrast characteristics of prokaryotes, eukaryotes and viruses Compare/contrast anatomical and physiological characteristics of organisms representative of each kingdom Explain structural and functional changes of organisms as they have evolved over time Explain why biodiversity is important for maintaining viable ecosystems Learning Goals

4 Yesterday’s (Friday’s) Recap
6 Kingdoms of Life: Archeabacteria, Eubacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia Terms: Prokaryote / Eukaryote, Heterotroph/Autotroph, Yesterday’s (Friday’s) Recap

Minds ON: What’s Wrong?

6 Minds ON Continued.…. Our whole universe was in a hot dense state,
Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started. Wait... The Earth began to cool, The autotrophs began to drool, Neanderthals developed tools, We built a wall (we built the pyramids), Math, science, history, unraveling the mysteries, That all started with the big bang! Minds ON Continued.….

7 Dichotomous Keys Dichotomous Key:
A tool that allows someone to identify various organisms and classify them Through a series of choices, a correct identification can be made Tip for memory: “Dichotomous” is a division between two things, similar to the two choices given in a key. Dichotomous Keys

8 Things to Remember About Making Keys…
Use constant characteristics rather than variable ones. Use measurements rather than terms like “large” or “small”. Use characteristics that are generally available to the user of the key rather than seasonal characteristics or those seen only in the field. Make the choice a positive one – something “is” instead of “is not”. If possible, start both choices of a pair with the same word. If possible, start different pairs of choices with different words. Things to Remember About Making Keys…

9 Dichotomous Keys Continued…
There should be one less step than there are total organisms to classify. The first step in the key should divide the organisms in roughly half. Both choices of a pair should be about the same attribute. Dichotomous Keys Continued…

10 Let’s Try It…
