5 What is the Declaration of Independence?
After Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense, colonists were convinced that it was time to become independent from the tyranny of England! The Declaration of Independence is the document written by the colonists to officially break ties with England and King George

6 What are the ideas/complaints in the DOI?

After we declared our independence, we needed our own government. The Articles of Confederation was our nation’s first independent government. It created a confederation A system where the states are stronger than the national government

8 What are the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation?
The national government had no power to: Tax Regulate trade (commerce) Enforce the laws Establish courts Make changes to the government without a unanimous decision from all 13 states These weaknesses were revealed after an event known as: Shays’ Rebellion

9 What were the viewpoints of the Anti-Federalists and Federalists?
After the weaknesses of the Articles was revealed, delegates gathered at the Constitutional Convention to write a new plan for government Anti-federalists Against the new Constitution Felt a strong central government would threaten individual rights Federalists Supported the new Constitution Felt a strong central government would protect our nation from attacks

10 How did the Federalists and Anti-Federalists come to agree on the Constitution?
The Federalists wrote the Federalist Papers to convince people to support the Constitution The Anti-federalists demanded that a Bill of Rights be added to the Constitution The purpose of the Bill of Rights is to protect individual freedoms/liberties. The Constitutional Convention ended with the creation of the U.S. Constitution The Constitution is our current written plan for government. It is the Supreme Law of the Land!
