1 IEEE 802 Study Project Proposal -
July 2002July 2003 IEEE 802 Study Project Proposal - Test Methodology for Wireless Performance Stephen Berger TEM Consulting (512) H. Stephen Berger, TEM Consulting, LP

2 Overview Purpose of this Study Project What problem is being solved?
July 2002July 2003 Overview Purpose of this Study Project What problem is being solved? Project Scope? What will be done and what will not be done? Potential for Success? Is there a reasonable potential for success? Benefits? H. Stephen Berger, TEM Consulting, LP

3  Sum of Sub-Component Specifications End-to-End System Performance
Month 2002 doc.: IEEE /xxxr0 July 2002July 2003 Sum of Sub-Component Specifications End-to-End System Performance Broadband Pipes to Home network H. Stephen Berger, TEM Consulting, LP John Doe, His Company

4 July 2002July 2003 Purpose The performance experienced in real installation environments varies significantly because of a number of complicated, and interrelated factors. Currently there is no generally accepted method for evaluating this performance. What is needed is a end user, device level, test and analysis method(s) that provides a good degree of confidence in predicting the coverage, throughput and directivity performance of IEEE (and potentially other) wireless devices. H. Stephen Berger, TEM Consulting, LP

5 In Scope Methods for prediction of real installation performance:
July 2002July 2003 In Scope Methods for prediction of real installation performance: Predicting the: coverage throughput directivity performance latency errors Both asynchronous and isochronous data Measurement correlation, precision & repeatability Correlation to differing deployment scenarios H. Stephen Berger, TEM Consulting, LP

6 Out of Scope Measurements of radio component performance
July 2002July 2003 Out of Scope Measurements of radio component performance Regulatory issues Purely theoretical analysis Purely conducted tests Power consumption Designation of ‘acceptable’ performance H. Stephen Berger, TEM Consulting, LP

7 Variables Effect of: Antenna gain and pattern Receiver sensitivity
July 2002July 2003 Variables Effect of: Antenna gain and pattern Receiver sensitivity Transmit power Protocol/host processing Environmental and system noise Band crowding Environmental noise H. Stephen Berger, TEM Consulting, LP

8 July 2002July 2003 Sources for Ideas Most manufacturers currently have internal evaluation methods. Mobile phone manufacturers and service providers have methods they have developed. Evaluation methods used by DoD, broadcasters, NIST and others for multiple, co-located antennas. H. Stephen Berger, TEM Consulting, LP

9 Benefits Predictable wireless experience for consumers.
July 2002July 2003 Benefits Predictable wireless experience for consumers. More effective and standard evaluation of new designs. Enhanced propagation of IEEE 802 standards, due to improved perception of end-user performance. H. Stephen Berger, TEM Consulting, LP
