doc.: 11-03-0927-01-0wng Submission - Study Project Proposal WPP - Introduction November 2003 Pratik Mehta, Dell Inc.Slide 1 IEEE 802.11 WNG Study Project Proposal - Wireless Performance Prediction (WPP) Report Pratik Mehta Dell Inc.

doc.: 11-03-0927-01-0wng Submission - Study Project Proposal WPP - Introduction November 2003 Pratik Mehta, Dell Inc.Slide 2 Motivations Currently there is no generally accepted method for predicting or evaluating performance of 802.11 systems –The metrics and methodologies used are inconsistent –Measurement efforts thus provide widely varying results – non uniformity Need a common set of tests to measure and predict performance of the end device

doc.: 11-03-0927-01-0wng Submission - Study Project Proposal WPP - Introduction November 2003 Pratik Mehta, Dell Inc.Slide 3 Expectations from the SG Common metrics and test methodology definition –Usable during development of implementations that adhere to 802.11 standards –Tests that combine the industry best practices that can be used consistently across different devices, while still enabling each device to optimize on the metrics based on its own objectives Scope should exclude a rating system and not attempt to define what performance level is acceptable

doc.: 11-03-0927-01-0wng Submission - Study Project Proposal WPP - Introduction November 2003 Pratik Mehta, Dell Inc.Slide 4 Proposed Scope for SG IS …IS NOT … Set of metrics and tests that help in predicting and measuring performance Designation of acceptable level of performance Applicable to end device – identify and comprehend the impact of variables like antenna properties, radio specs, environmental and system noise, band crowding, … Limited to performance measurements of components that make up the end device, although these are not excluded Measurement correlation, precision & repeatability Addressing regulatory issues Correlation to differing deployment scenarios Limited to purely theoretical analysis, simulations or conducted tests

doc.: 11-03-0927-01-0wng Submission - Study Project Proposal WPP - Introduction November 2003 Pratik Mehta, Dell Inc.Slide 5 Differentiation from TGk TGk is about live measurements to aid management and tuning of the wireless network during operation WPP is about off-line performance measurements and tests TGk defines protocol aspects WPP does not define 802.11 protocols TGk defines measurements that are done by the devices themselves WPP defines measurements done to the devices

doc.: 11-03-0927-01-0wng Submission - Study Project Proposal WPP - Introduction November 2003 Pratik Mehta, Dell Inc.Slide 6 Why do this in 802.11? Relevance and importance is for 802.11 due to the wide success of this standard in the industry The expertise is concentrated in the 802.11 WG Not everybody that attends IEEE is a member of Wi-Fi Alliance Wi-Fi Alliance depends on and leverages the work done in the IEEE802.11 Starting the work in 802.11 will guarantee that Wi-Fi will pay attention to it IEEE has successfully tackled test methodology development in the past (eg 802.3)

doc.: 11-03-0927-01-0wng Submission - Study Project Proposal WPP - Introduction November 2003 Pratik Mehta, Dell Inc.Slide 7 Conclusion Industry benefits from a uniform set of wireless performance prediction metrics and tests –Developers, Customers, End Users, Reviewers Enable Fairness –Provide the uniform set of rules for evaluations Systematize the functional requirements and comparison criteria for future SGs/TGs in 802.11WG
