1 Welcome to the Guided Pathways Work Groups!
1 Welcome to the Guided Pathways Work Groups! Thank you for joining a Guided Pathways Work Group! In this presentation, we will give an overview of the three elements of the SJCC Work Plan that these groups will focus on for the coming year. Following this presentation, we will take a look at: The SJCC Guided Pathways website The SJCC Guided Pathways work plan The budget The compensation process Cross Functional Inquiry Intersegmental Alignment Basic Skills Improvement

2 Essential Conditions Make sure the following conditions are in place — prepared, mobilized, and adequately resourced — to support the college’s large-scale transformational change: • Strong change leadership throughout the institution • Faculty and staff engagement • Commitment to using data • Capacity to use data • Technology infrastructure • Professional development • Favorable policy (state, system, and institutional levels) and board support • Commitment to student success and equity

3 Preparation/Awareness
Understand where you are, prepare for change, and build awareness by: • Engaging stakeholders and making the case for change • Establishing a baseline for key performance indicators • Building partnerships with K–12, universities, and employers • Developing flowcharts of how students choose, enter, and complete programs • Developing an implementation plan with roles and deadlines

4 Sustainability Commit to pathways for the long term and make sure they are implemented for all students by: • Determining barriers to sustainability (state, system, and institutional levels) • Redefining the roles of faculty,staff, and administrators as needed • Identifying needs for professional development and technical assistance • Revamping technology to support the redesigned student experience • Reallocating resources as needed • Continuing to engage key stakeholders, especially students • Integrating pathways into hiring and evaluation practices

5 Cross Functional Inquiry: What Is It?
The cross-functional inquiry looks at all the aspects of the student’s educational experience at SJCC to see how they fit together. Much as one might start working on a puzzle by sorting the pieces, the cross-functional inquiry starts with assessing what already exists. What are we already doing? How well are these things working? Can we replicate and scale the things that are working well? What are the external resources we can build on? Members of the cross-functional inquiry team will be looking at relevant data to assess our current state, evaluating tools (such as software platforms) for improving our services, and engaging in deep and inclusive discussions about how to improve all aspects of the student experience at SJCC.

Develop an online counseling intake system Review the GP Self Assessment Develop the GP comprehensive plan, Integrate professional development Improve institutional technology support from the DO student checkpoints and common entry and exit milestones based on successful campus models Fold other initiatives into GP Tutor progress reports Review Hobson's Starfish and eLumen Review internal and external student data Refine matriculation & transfer processes

9 Intersegmental Alignment: What Is It?
SJCC K-12 4-YEAR IP Intersegmental Alignment is about our relationships with other segments of the educational system: K-12 and 4 year institutions, as well as our industry partners. Some of the topics that members of this work group will be looking at our current intake processes, articulation, matriculation, and internships.

High School orientations Use HS transcripts to help placement needs of remedial students Triangulate student's starting position on the Guided Pathways map Assist students in career selection Clarify the Path– provide updated, streamlined curriculum and classes, using existing PDD opportunities and successful program models Choose and Enter a Pathway - determine the level of college readiness and map out the route using integrated planning and AB705 goals and approach. Improve Intake processes, orientation topics and online modalities Stay on the Path—monitoring and interventions, expedite class selection and completion

12 Basic Skills Improvement: Math and English
With the passage of AB705, starting in fall 2019 California Community Colleges must place students in college-level Math and English within their first year. By some interpretations, colleges will be required to place students directly into college level Math and English with no remedial classes. While clarity is still needed on this topic, San Jose City College must nonetheless prepare to comply with this new law. Members of the Basic Skills Improvement work group will work with the AB705 work group to review student success data in Basic Skills and evaluate existing strategies and programs aimed at assisting the underprepared student, as well as identify new strategies to accomplish this.

13 Example: Basic Skills Improvement: Summer Bridge
The 2018 Summer Bridge Program at SJCC will be piloting the placement of student cohorts into college level Math classes. With its robust student support, the Summer Bridge could provide a model for how the college might address the needs of underprepared students. Additionally, data gathered from Summer Bridge will help the college determine the best course (or courses) of action in preparing for the implementation of AB705.

Initiatives launched aimed at motivating BSI students, and removing many of the barriers that have traditionally held them back from accomplishing their goals Resume embedded tutoring program. Student Learning Outcomes Toolbox—potential project GP to include Educational Plans and Transfer Plans Use tools of AB-705 for analyzing prospective transfer students’ needs for remedial education Provide"11th hour support" to students based on real time results from academic testing and counseling initiatives BSI skills dashboard, internships STEM boot camp, student clusters based on majors
