1 Agenda for October 15th Task 1
Head you own paper with the MLA heading. Use the assignment title: Journal 3. Respond to the journal prompt on the next slide.

Directions: Make sure to label your entry Journal 3 and to write in complete sentences. Minimum of 50 words.  What skills do you believe are necessary in order to demonstrate you are being a good listener?  What is the difference between hearing and listening?  Identify at least 3 things you can do to demonstrate that you are being attentive while listening.  Give 2 examples of poor listening habits you have experienced.

Pick up a copy of the Effective Listening notes sheet (small half sheet). Complete that notes sheet with the information on the following slides.

4 Listening Listening: a physical and psychological process that involves acquiring, assigning meaning, and responding to symbolic messages from others. The primary reason for listening is to acquire oral messages from others.

5 Importance of Listening
Many important aspects of your life are influenced by your listening skills – or lack thereof. Areas in life directly affected by your effectiveness as a listener include: school relationships social groups the workplace organizations public dialogue

6 The Listening Process Listening is more than hearing sounds or understanding language. Listening involves four active steps that build upon one another: Acquiring Attending Understanding Responding

7 Acquiring Acquiring is the act of picking up some type of stimulus
through the senses. Examples: Hearing a bell Watching facial gestures

8 Attending Attending is the act of choosing to focus your attention on what is being said and/or presented; to be in the present. Attending does NOT include: Being on your phone Talking to your neighbor Drawing/writing on your paper Staring off into space/Daydreaming

9 Understanding To understand is to perceive the meaning of; grasp the idea of;  comprehend. Ways to encourage understanding: Face the speaker Ask questions when appropriate Pay attention to nonverbal cues

10 Responding • Reflect the speaker’s words (paraphrase).
Responding is important to clarify and convey to the speaker that you are listening. Responding can take several forms. • Reflect the speaker’s words (paraphrase). “What I heard you say was…” • Ask questions to clarify. “When you said________, did you mean_______?” • Summarize the speaker’s points.

11 Factors that Affect The Listening Process
Noise: anything that interferes with a message. Barriers: any obstacle that blocks communication. Memory: the process of retaining or recalling information.

12 Agenda October 15th, 2015 Task 3 Head a sheet of paper with the MLA Heading, and use the assignment title: Quick Write Complete the quick write on the next slide and leave it in the in-box.

13 Quickwrite Write a TRUE story using this as your first line.
“It all started when _______________ wasn’t listening to what I was really saying.” Your story must have a minimum of 75 words. Make sure to write your word count at the bottom of your paper and circle the number of words. Turn in to class tray before you leave for 2nd block.
