1 The CVD Metadata Handler
Item 5.4 of the Agenda The CVD Metadata Handler Progress report A. Götzfried, Unit B6 B. Å. Lindblad, Unit B5 21-22 October 2009 IT Director's Group Meeting

2 The CVD-Metadata Handler
is the backbone of a metadata-driven harmonised statistical business process at Eurostat; provides one central interface for accessing different types of metadata by Eurostat staff or by the members of the ESS; provides services to other CVD IT applications; Is the primary source for different types of harmonised metadata to used within Eurostat and the European Statistical System; 21-22 October 2009 IT Director's Group Meeting 2

The MH is being constructed via the step by step integration of several existing applications. The core of the MH is provided by the Eurostat SDMX Registry, which is a metadata registry containing the structural metadata (for example, DSDs and MSDs as well as standard code lists) which apply to both data and reference metadata in the CVD. The single environment of the MH means that the different components of the MH (corresponding to existing applications such as EMIS, RAMON, etc.) will appear to the user as a single application: 21-22 October 2009 IT Director's Group Meeting 3

5 The components of the CVD-MH: the SDMX Registry
The Eurostat SDMX Registry is the central component of the CVD-MH; will contain SDMX data structure and metadata structure definitions used in statistical domains; already contains the existing Eurostat and ECB data structure definitions used for GESMES-based data transmission; can accommodate also national data structure definitions if needed; will be synchronised with the reference database Eurobase (for structural metadata and code lists) will store different types of harmonized metadata to be used by the domain-specific Eurostat production systems or within the ESS. will be cleaned up and improved with regard to its content. 21-22 October 2009 IT Director's Group Meeting 5

7 The National Reference Metadata Editor
is the component dealing with national reference metadata, also based on the Euro-SDMX Metadata Structure (ESMS); is first of all addressed to national producer of reference metadata, who will be able to compile their domain-specific metadata and then send them to Eurostat via Edamis in SDMX-ML format; will send the national reference metadata via Edamis to EMIS where the Eurostat domain manager can access or treat the national metadata and send it then to the Eurostat dissemination if wanted; should be made available within Eurostat by autumn 2009 and to countries in a second stage; can accommodate other metadata parts if needed (national quality reports could be included in term). 21-22 October 2009 IT Director's Group Meeting 7

8 All over More and more components and functionalities of the CVD MH got available and will get available in 2010/2011. A complete and fully functioning CVD Metadata Handler covering a broad set of harmonised metadata is the necessary pre-condition for a metadata driven statistical production process and also for the further integration of the statistical business process as outlined in the Commission Communication 404/2009. 21-22 October 2009 IT Director's Group Meeting
