1 To bee or not to bee All bugs are insects, but not all insects are bugs. Insects are the largest class of animal on Earth Insects are members of the invertebrate group in the animal kingdom (no internal skeleton) The body of an insect is usually divided into 3 parts: - Head (mouth, eyes, antennae) - Thorax (legs, *wings) - Abdomen (internal organs, heart, reproductive organs)

2 Buccal Apparatus adapted to diet
Different mouths = different diet (see p. 8) A grasshopper is a grinder and a bee is a sucker-licker

3 Insect eyes Insect eyes can be either simple or compound

4 Its all about the legs! (see p. 9)
The legs of insects are adapted to their various ways of moving. Z-shaped legs = quick hopping Hairy legs = collect pollen

5 The Life Cycle of insects (p.16)
Life cycle: stages from conception to death Moult: renew various parts of their body (horns, skeleton, etc...) Metamorphosis : Drastic change in structure

6 Two types of metamorphosis
Complete metamorphosis: - 4 stages: Stage 1 : Egg Stage 2: larva Stage 3 : pupa (cocoon) Stage 4 : adult Incomplete metamorphosis 3 Stages Stage 1 : Egg Stage 2: larva Stage 3: adult

7 In class work! P. 6 (To be or Not to Be...an Insect)
***Homework Assignment*** Find/capture an insect and create an observation/identification card as seen on p. 12; Figure 5) *Pick an insect you find interesting ,research it and bring your findings for the next class (and markers/colors) (see p.15)
